Start out as merchant king in game settings. then get a diplomat asap and improve relations. I started doing this when I found the game to be a little difficult in my first 4 hours. Get trade agreements asap also with kingdoms nearby. figure out what your resources your lands can create and get them asap. Usually, early resource like furs, wood, cows, horses, minerals, amber are all good things to jump to and that should kickstart your economy. There are a lot of things the game doesn't explain at first but think of it like a city builder more than a 4x grand strategy at first and exploit the resources that give you commerce bags(its the brown bag icon) or maybe religion if you have a lot of monasteries. pause the game as soon as you get into it and figure out how you want to build up your provinces. If this doesn't help just restart and ignore their troops over and over till it makes more sense.

Since all resources are randomized it will play a little different each time.

You dont really want early wars, only if you can get awey with some looting.

Instead you want to grow you book production, your merchants, your money producing buildings, and your trade power.
And while you do that you have a hilarius time watching the AI waste tons of rescources muderring each others peasent armys.

Early wars are high risk hige reward that often only exhaust your finances when you should be snow balling your eco and Knights skills.

The AI will get itself into all kinds of wars, just wait for the opening.
When the AI dont have enough workers to hire new regiments, and their army consist of 7 peasents and a bowman, you go in with your 4 horse, 2inf, 2bow + plus your lord with cav skill and it will be like taking candy from kids.

Wars in this game is won by better lord and units, and access to food, money and recruits, you don’t have that early game

Early wars imo is nothing but a noob trap
