When it still existed, it was called the Roman Empire, and its citizens considered themselves Romans. It's only in the modern day (post-roman empire) do we refer to it as anything else.
But they were Greek.
I mean, I know that they called themselves Romans.
It just always bothered me.
It's same as with Rus.
First Moskow dinasty was Rurikid, same as in Kyiv. But people who lived there wasn't even Slavs.
Yeah, modern people refer to the Roman Empire that centered around Constantinople as The Eastern Roman Empire or as The Byzantium Empire. It's still the Roman Empire, which is also why you can recruit Roman Infantry there. Maybe a mod can rename someday, but it's still the same thing.
It's called The Byzantium Empire in the game because that's what most people recognize it as. But it's actually The Roman Empire.
Yeah, that's a big reason they're called The Eastern Roman Empire or The Byzantium Empire, since it was mostly Greek instead of Latin. But, to be fair, the Romans do have a lot in common with the Greeks. (And it seems like a lot of their culture was originally inspired by the Greeks).
I don't know much about CK2, but you can restore the Byzantium Empire in this game, which is the Roman Empire.
You know a lot and you are 100 % true but there is a reason the world didn’t see Byzantine as Roman and it all started when the pope in Rome to save his own ass and abit of back door politics crowned Charlemagne as emperor of Romans. And the papacy went from legitimacy body for the next emperor to saying the title of emperor of romans was a position bestowed by god. Thus empress irene and the ruler of the Byzantines who for hundreds of years were back by the papacy as true rulers of Rome were suddenly not recognised as in their eyes a women cannot have a title set by god.
This eventually lead to the HRE we know today and thus the Byzantine empire were “in history books” were know as Easten Roman and then Greeks all due to Pope Leo who to save himself (was almost kicked out due to being of common birth) basically threw out 400 years of tradition
Yeah, that's interesting. I thought about mentioning the HRE. (It seems like Germany, with its many vassals, is basically "the HRE". Not sure if we can restore the German empire, though.)
I think in EU4 or something, the HRE looks very similar to how it looks in KoH2. That game just has more advanced politics/diplomacy. But, I guess I don't really consider the HRE as the Roman Empire. The Byzantium Empire was actually a part of the original Roman Empire before it split in two, just feels more legitimate.
But, since we're playing a medieval game, I think either the Byzantium Empire or the HRE are our only options for having a "Roman Empire" in the game. If someone does a mod that brings it back to the classical era, maybe we'd get to see a Roman Empire then. (Not sure how much freedom we have with modding this game, but if it was made with Unity, then there's probably a lot of hope).
Its possible to mod it in can change everything from available units, countries, buildings, but that will take time. I mod also so I know someone is working on making HRE and roman empire a formable nation. i think the rest to make the whole game back to classical age will take time.
