Can't "import goods"

Playing as the Finns. Never get any iron in my provinces so I have to import it. I look at the mini map to make sure I start a trade route with a country that has that specific good. I start the trade route but the option to import iron never comes up. Does anyone know whats up with this? Is the distance a factor. I have trade agreement and non aggro pact but still nothing comes up. Is the option influenced by a specific skill?

Are you trying to manually import it or just waiting for the special event?

I cant seem to figure it out but it seems to be tied to a random merchant event and only when the ai actually builds the building but most ai dont build it they focus too much on military buildings

The random event only gives you a special discount, you can choose which good you want to import, as long as the AI has it.

So is the consensus that the AI hasnt developed tech tree for iron if there's no option in the merchant drop down menu?

Because according to the mini map province characteristic thing, the kingdoms i'm trading with are supposed to have it.

Yes, they likely just don't have it yet. Is the kingdom shown as green or just green stripes? If it's stripes, then they have access to it but aren't gathering it.

The AI doesn't always build the stuff required to have it, I don't think the AI even reorganizes itself if it grows in size, so it may never actually build it.
