how to keep these little A-holes happy?

i cant find an action, option or other mechanics other than wait and occasionally an event you can spend money on that "Might" improve their opinion.

if you go to war they always get mad, so you are basically boned after your first conquest since you cant recover their opinion in any "timely" manner.

Send your diplomats to increase the opinion of your subjects. They randomly increase opinion of any of the five classes and will eventually hit the clergy as well.

ive not had this happen once after a long time of 'improving opinions', but if you are sure this also works on clerics, ill try.

Clerics can get opportunities to improve opinion of the Clergy, I have seen it ranging from 1-3 points.

Whenever a Cathedral is constructed it improves opinion significantly.

Positive diplomacy with the Papacy also improves it. Fund and/or lead Crusades, create a non-aggression pact with the Papacy. Clerics also get opportunities to travel to Rome to improve relations with the Papacy, I also think the Clergy likes this.

Converting infidel provinces probably also increases it, although in my game the Clergy opinion is almost permanently on 10 so I'm not sure it.

I haven't seen that one increase the clergy opinion

Depends on the religion, catholic you donate money to rome, participate in crusades, declare wars on enemies of the faith, do missions to holy lands, appease clergy, negotiate peace between people of the same faith
