Squad 44

Squad 44

driving tanks
im a regular squad player (mostly armor) and could never get that much into squad 44. been trying squad 44 on off for the past 4 years.

i understand that they made the driving more "realistic" with the gear shifting but holy moly its such a horrible experience driving tanks in this game to a point where it takes all the fun away and makes me want to uninstall every time. im fine with the damage model and having your crew get shot out in a fight but does the game really have to over complicate driving?

surely they could have changed the damage model but keep the original driving. i honestly hope OWI changes driving to make it more enjoyable.

It's not that complicated, and once you get the hang of it you will realize how great it is. Just play around with it on the training range or use console command to open your own map and drive around. :slgeneral:

As an armor player, I understand where he is coming from.

A large portion of the tanks added by the new update have some bizarre quirks, and the skill ceiling can be rather high. American armored guns and German casemates are the worst examples, but nobody can say something like the French logi truck is working as intended, drifting like a Need for Speed TAS.

One of the huge reason this happens is due to the physics of turning tanks not existing properly. You hit a key, the game registers it a second late, and the tank begins a hard veer. There is no middle ground of turning with inertia, you will go full force with turning the vehicle. Casemates are affected the most by this, with any minor adjustment throwing the gunner a huge margin away from target.

Another one is weird gearbox quirks. The Chaffee is bugged and refuses to turn on certain gears. The armored cars have twice the gears to maintain, with very strange interactions with the enviroment when in high gear. I've taken a Puma on 5th gear down a straight road without any obstacles, and it flipped 20 feet into the air. New players can very, very easily be punished for attempting to run anything lighter than a Pz2.

Armor in this game is a very precise affair, with extremely imprecise driving mechanics and controls. I do wish they would take another look into potentially refining the physics.
