So I realize that you definitely don't need to max out your exam score to get the highest job in all fields. I got other really high paying jobs with 500 level scores as well. Including the stock broker that gives an allowance of 100 per turn, which was only high 500 or low 600.
Overall I think it is more important to max out any career skills, than it is to max out the exam. So you can some what ignore your studies and be okay.
In fact, if you aim for a lower tier job then you don't need a high score on the ending exam. Which means you have more free time to date so you can get a good marriage(which passes on more stats from your spouse), or search for traits(which I believe is what determines the stat bonus of your child). So settling for a lower tier career might be a valid tactic for making your child stronger the next generation.
Actually, male population is more than female. So a man is get more difficult to find a wife than a woman to find a husband.
