Why do I keep losing Ascension Crystals?

During the course of this gems I have periodically checked on the amount of Crystals earned and percentage to the next crystal, and all seems to go well earning them...THEN I will check later and notice either the percentage toward the next crystal has DECREASED, AND the amount of Crystals has as well...WHY?

Are you spending your picks on upgrading skills? That's probably the largest sink for picks outside of ascension.

I just lost 2 ascension crystals and the percentage towards the next crystal.
I only upgraded my pickaxes and that didn't affect the ascension percentage.

Could you please explain what skills it is, that has an effect on the ascension crystals?

The ascension crystals are based on your current picks, so anything that costs you picks will decrease the number of ascension crystals you'll get.

The skill tree is available when clicking the shield icon on the bottom, then the star icon on the top. There, you can spend picks to gain skill points, which you can then use on player/chest/idle skills. Many of these are very powerful, and you shouldn't ignore them. If you're going to ascend soon, though, you do need to be aware that the picks you spend on skill points will decrease the ascension crystals you'll get.

argh that makes sense, I remember spending picks to gain skill points, but didn't realize it would decrease my ascension crystals. I'm not ignoring them, I just want to have around 50-60 ascension crystals before I ascend. And I already got 181 unspent skill points, so I'm definitely not going to spend more picks on that or anything else.
