Saving does not work

Yes, that is correct - they dont work. Most likely because DOSBox is not properly configured for drive mounting so game has nowhere to save to.

I'll try to use D-Fend Reloaded as a config tool instead of Dosbox it is shipped with and see if that helps.

Did anything come of this? I've tried making mounting the folder as C:, I've tried making make all the files read/write enabled, and I've tried multiple versions of DOSBOX, but I'm just not getting anything. I can get the high scores to save, but that's it.

It's really a shame that there's no way to save in this version. As it stands, it's mostly useless for my purposes. I've been meaning to revisit all the tracks for nostalgic reasons (it was one of the first PC games that really got me hooked back in the day), but I'm really not crazy about having to play through the entire campaign from scratch every time to do so. In fact, I'm not particularly crazy about the campaign to begin with, and I wish there were some workable cheats at least to make all tracks and cars available without all the hassle. If the save feature worked, at least players wouldn't have to start all over again every single time, especially seeing as the result of any race is more a question of luck than actual skill much of the time. Oh well.

Works fine for me. Didn't do anything to get it to work, it just always worked.
