Dream theory, anyone? When that one was proposed the entire fandom blew a collective gasket over the possibility that the canon was all a dream. And understandably so, for although an author always has the right to do what he wants with his story, it's widely disregarded as a cheap plot device to reveal at the end that "it was all a dream." Doing so comes across as an excuse for any lingering plot twists or mysteries: "It doesn't have to make perfect sense, it was just a dream!" Scott's already told us that there is a cohesive story behind FNaF and I trust that story is a lot more solid than "heh, it was all made up, but thanks all the same for buying those books that were supposed to give hints to the made-up lore." Really doubt Scott would go that route. Claiming now that all the FNaF games were made-up stories is more or less the dream theory under another name.
My theory on what's really going on here:
The indie game dev (IGD) is also dismissed as a "complete lunatic." That's par for the course at Freddy's. Even good-guy Henry would've had Mike committed as insane and subjected to a lobotomy if Mike had been too nosy and hacked Egg Baby to reveal Henry's secret recording.
What if IGD didn't create the actual FNaF games, but at least some of the minigames? Fazbear Ent could've told IGD, "hey, rumors are flying about some guy in a car causing trouble behind our pizzeria, could you make a Night Driver knockoff to capitalize on this?" Except IGD, maybe with some collusion from Henry, threw in a secret Easter Egg that revealed the car's driver was not a nice guy. The secret, of course, being the part where the player exits the car and proves himself to be a scuzzball.
Fazbear Ent: "Could you make a related game where Fredbear's giving cake to hungry, cranky kids?"
IGD: "Sure thing!" *Secretly adds an off-screen scene depicting Puppet's murder while the kids were being served cake.*
Fazbear Ent: "We need to rebrand our Spring Bonnie as a good guy who helps reunite kids with their lost pets, thanks to something about a *cough* murdered child and her dog *cough.* Think you could run with this Fruity Maze concept? It's basically Pac-Man."
IGD: "I'll get right on it." *Includes nightmare levels that most players wouldn't be able to reach, revealing the corruption of the maze and the player's dead dog.*
Fazbear Ent: "Hey again, now some kid disappears and they're all blaming Circus Baby. Could you make us a cutesy side-scroller where she's a benevolent mascot handing out cupcakes to hungry kids?"
IGD: *Includes scene depicting Elizabeth's death to Circus Baby.*
In all the above cases, the minigames weren't 100 percent true-to-life, but IGD succeeded in complying with Fazbear Ent's demands while simultaneously revealing the truth to the world about what really happened.
There's a real-life counterpart to this, starting with dev Warren Robinett, who hid his name in Atari 2600's Adventure because Atari usually didn't credit the devs, let alone give them a commission on game sales. The hidden credit was discovered months later and started the whole Easter Egg trend.
So, what if Fazbear Ent commissioned IGD to create happy, sunny minigames (that would just be known as "games" in-universe), only IGD's hidden dark secrets were eventually discovered, and now whatever remnant of Fazbear Ent that still exists is sweating bullets that the truth has come out? They're trying to commission a game that would retcon all of IGD's previous games, but "he let something in" and even the new game has a glitch that's probably going to reveal something huge.
Edit: actually if this is true, what if we play as Scott in fnaf 6? It would Explain how we have a heart beat.
Its makes total sense and is briliant. No gamer goes trough the story same way twice. Everyone have different experience and story (How they beat the nights etc.) in their game (Let alone you can die there) hence Movie have set story, set line, and is made from point A to B.
The story is true. Games are just loosen on whats been happening on the nights. Lore is same and unchanged.
Its briliant and good power move if you ask me. And i belive Scot have much bigger plans with franchise now (he is genius he proven it many times and FNaF is his passion)
"Ha ha, yes the guy making games about us... hahahaha...... yeah... hahaha... don't believe them.... I'm not the kiddie strangler btw." - William Afton
the games were BASED ON THE "REAL" EVENTS IN the fnaf universe
seriously the tapes in no way claim the events never happened
like seriously it's not that hard to understand everything we have done, every single one of the games we've played are still can on to fnaf's over all storyline
