If you play around with the starting buildings you have you'll notice - the Temple of Krypta's skeletons have an 88% evasion against Dragons - just one Temple's worth of skeletons will not be enough to protect the kingdom, but if you build a 2nd one when you get to Palace level 2 (3rd is excessive) the majority of the Dragon's that attack you will almost always hit a road block
This won't help actually killing the Dragon's lair though, since they work pretty BADLY when away from home - For that the "path of least resistance" is to just build a fairgrounds and then get a really leveled up squad of a hero like the Tenple of Helia Solari - with the skeletons on stalling duty, you have the time.
If you want to fight the Dragon's at low level instead - Solari can win against a (wither spelled) dragon, and Barbarians can as well (you can't build them. only find the free ones out in the wilderness).
I dislike playing defensive but a couple bonus things - Guardhouses are useless - Dragon's outrange them - Dwarven Ballista work well but you'll be attacked before they're available - Wizard's Tower's work great but ONLY in pairs (2) OR if you use Gnomes as your non-human race so that the will be healed "mid fight" with the dragons. --- I like to play this scenario without any of these buildings at all, just focusing on my krytpa > krypta 2 > Helia thing (there is plenty of room to express yourself using other stuff thouugh)
Dont make Gnomes
Dont destroy any castles till you find KROM
Make Lunord and Not Helia
Move ranger tower near palace and recruit few so that they can dicover that single trade guild so that you will get 9000 goal as tax.
Market place nearest to gate of Palace
and Also Blacksmith near palace
We need to protect these two
Destroy the ranger guild once you get this guild money.
This is very important so that they dont discover KROM prematurely otherwise we cannot protect KROM and its a waste.
Dont bother with gaurd towers.
Make kryptas as skeleton can 1 vs 1 dragons.
Make level 2 wizard guild and place 2/3 wizard towers at three sides of the castle
Market place nearest to gate of Palace
Enchant guild tower to help with dragons if needed.
Keep of upgrading black smith and level 2 palce to get the Dwarfs.
You need it for their towers.
No need to make too many towers but make another Krypta.
* kryptas will have lot of skeletons .
DOnt waste too much on wizards.
Then develop a lot and make faregrounds etc.
Make Lunord and Not Helia
make huge money and then use dwarfs to explore to find the Krom
Immediately cover krom with dwarf towers and at least save one of the Krom temple
Use krom power to kill dragons .
now game is basically have money explore and kill the three castles to get to hidden tomb
My advice is to stack up on Priestesses right away (for their minions' dragon-killing power) and power level a blacksmith so you can get Ballista Towers. Once you've reached critical mass and surrounded your settlement with a protective ring of turrets, you can breathe a lot easier.
There is a trading post pretty close to your starting location that has 9000 gold in it as well. If you can get a tax collector there and back it allows you to get everything you need very quickly.
I believe I also went for Wizards guild, dragons are weak to magic (so wizards can do okay) and the level 3 wizard nuke is very effective against them. If you can get a bazaar up the shapeshifting potions help wizards survive quite a bit. I'd skip warriors of Discord as they're just terrible, but Fervus cultists should work alright with their high dodge as well.
