Trading posts attract trolls that bash them (just as marketplaces do, but they are generally better protected) so I wouldn't leave them up without a Guard tower, preferably a ballista.
Too much effort imo.
Also take care of Ratman the gold stealer and Tax collection killer.
Inns being the easiest to mass-produce obviously.
It's still overall better to go for the Inns if you can afford them (because the natural services they offer including the revenue they generate outweighs that of the blacksmith), but from a viewpoint of cost, spamming blacksmiths has always been cheaper to get fountains for me.
did you include trading posts in there because trading posts I have observed many times also help in the creation of fountains.
I actually don't remember. I try to get to level 2 Palace as fast as possible usually when I can, either in freestyle or the quests that allow it. For the beginner quests where you don't need level 2 Palace, I'm not sure if it's also disabled or not.
I suspect you can get a Fountain at level 1 but unless you're playing at some type of non-monster setting, you're probably spending your gold and time to build up your defenses and recruiting heroes rather than going for the Fountain.
Same deal with the Trading Posts - they may add to the Fountain count but they're usually low on my list to build right away.
