Can WW3 Happen?

Pretty much as the title says. Can a World War 3 actually happen? I have played for around 8 years as the USA, and all I saw was completely scripted wars and independance stuff, but in some reviews, I hear about WW3 happening. So can World War 3 actually break out in this game?

EDIT: To add on to that, can unscripted wars actually happen? This is with world volatility at normal.

I have not seen WW3 break out and I have played for a couple hundred hours. But I have seen plenty of unscripted wars though. For example I have seen the USSR annex Japan and South Korea and I have seen South Korea Annex China which was surprising

At normal volatilty unscripted wars are going to be rare. Raise the volatilty to see more unscripted wars. I have started WW3 personally, but have not witnessed AI vs AI USA and USSR pull the trigger, though i'm sure it is possible.

There a mod called the End of Era mod and in that mod it has a ww3 scenario the only problem is it causes the game to go slow as hell because of all the units

You really got to help your enemy build up but yeah I know what you mean. I hear about all these cool WW3s I had to mod my own.
