Don't buy this game. I did and regret it.

Cons:

-Mouse goes off of the game screen and if you click, it freezes the game.
-The graphics glitch EVERYwhere. There isn't a single working place without graphical glitches.
-The enemies just stand around and never move. You also can't actually attack.
-As comedic as it is, the dialogue makes no sense. It's in English, but the devs obviously don't speak it.
-Sometimes there's no sound. Sometimes it's blasting through your headphones.
-The game told me to open a chest.... but wouldn't let me even with the items it required. I could not progress at that point.
-It looks like the devs threw everything together as fast as they could, payed the $100 fee to release a steam game, and just chucked it up.

This isn't even early access level. It's just broken.

The Monk and The Warrior: The Heart of the King. My first review copy as a curator, oh joy.

To start with I reviewed this game simply because it’s a milestone for me. I got a curator connect game which means I feel more like a semi-professional reviewer than ever before. Huzzah. So I decided to review it no matter what .

And the game… well, the game didn’t look like it’s going to be the next million seller, but with the little I saw about it made me feel maybe there might be something special here.

The game starts on a bit of a sour note. The game only offers options on my system up to 1600x1050. This is because the game is set in window mode. When switched to fullscreen, I could get 4k/1080p standards. Odd to limit the windowed mode so much.

So the actual game starts and the camera moves up a circular tower while text scrolls. The text is mildly interesting, but the camera movement is jerky. It’s probably not heavily animated, instead it is trying to follow a spline around a circular path, and it’s… very rough.

Then the real game starts. Now I’ll give this, the monk looks great, and many characters in the game look passable. I don’t understand why one of the two main characters is so whatever that is. You play as the monk until you can get items for the warrior, so the normal looking character is what you get, and when you get the armor, he’s hidden in it, but why not use a generic model then?

The first line of dialogue itself is a swear in Latin and an apology for swearing in Latin. Latin never comes up again, so an odd step to start the game as well.

There’s, of course, no voice acting so everything is written in a choice of two languages, either English or Russian. I can’t read Russian, but the English is painful at times. There’s a point where the game spells NPCs “NPS”. There are further spelling and grammar issues all over the place such as “I every night, fighting sleep and not know whether asleep.” Yeah, if you ignore the spelling, you still get brilliant pieces like that. Though over time I’d say it improves slightly.

The control is rough or unique if I am being generous. There is an on-screen mouse and camera. Both are mapped to the mouse, so to move over and click the quests, you have to move the camera at the same time. I’ve had a lot of trouble with the control, looking at quests is a chore, and the UI is crowded.

And there’s XP that comes from random moments… and levels. Apparently, the levels give you extra lives, but I was level two, died one time, and the game was over. So I’m not sure how that’s supposed to work. It’s not a traditional system.

A good example of the game is to go over a quest. There’s a quest about a chicken, apparently, the story is a guy who tends the chicken lost a chicken. Then later you come back and you find a marker in the pen. The guy magically appears. So the story tries to tell me he got bit by “someone”, then drank the wrong potion, and became a chicken now. Ok not Shakespearean but sure. Then the Monk decides to let him bite you and drink the other potion. Why?

Here’s the crazy part. His biting you WORKS and you can turn into a wolf by clicking on a button on the interface. And you will use this to get past enemies later. There are a few really obtuse quests you have to go through, such as finding a chest, lockpicking the chest (using an interesting lockpicking system that with a little work could have been good to great, there’s promise there). Then go fetch “plants” (you get one plant) and then go gamble with robbers in a horrible UI nightmare of a card game.

This is where the game glitched on me I couldn’t play the card game, so I couldn’t proceed and the save didn’t help. There seem to be some glitches in the save system. It’s better to quit then restart the game than load a save at some points.

So I restarted, ran to the same point in a couple of minutes instead of the original ninety minutes. And still had to fight through the card game. Here’s what it looks like: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1317743154

After a painful four or five games, dealing with that screen and the odd card game which says it’ll give you instructions but doesn’t, I won the game. It happens by random but then I was granted the ability to get armor and thus get the warrior. The dialogue for none of this is really intuitive, the warrior wants a sword and armor, and is “injured” the herb maker says “Come back in an hour” but you never have to return to her. You get “armor” but there’s no inventory and no discussion of a weapon.

So I got the warrior and raced to the forest to try out the combat, and see more of the game. First I ran through the area with my monk. I’m supposed to go to the castle, so I walked towards what I assumed was the castle. No one attacked but the monk said there was some issue with going forward. Then I realized I didn’t take the knight.

The knight has two main issues, he’s slow, and he can’t jump. The second is the biggest problem because you can glitch him into places where the monk would use his jump (which is shockingly bad) and can barely get out. The knight doesn’t have the jump so he can get stuck.

So hitting the switch button swaps their locations and they can see each other. This is good and interesting, however, the enemies attack the Warrior, not the monk, and the first enemy was easy. You’re only able to attack enemies, not wildlife or random people who just seem to stand there, but then two enemies ganged up on me. I died. My second level didn’t give me the extra life as the game implied, perhaps they meant health. And I realized I didn’t save after the card game.

So again I had to get back to the same point. And found it near impossible to get through the forest. Health doesn’t recharge, save and load does but resets your location, and save and loading are relatively broken (sometimes they work but the best situation is to quit the game, restart it and load from the main menu).

I didn’t come into this game to rip on it. It’s not my intention to insult someone’s game that they gave me a free code to. I wanted to talk about something good, and the lockpicking is a solid minigame. It’s just everything else is very rough. Now perhaps this isn’t the final code, but it was the review copy they sent me, and with it releasing next month, I can’t imagine they’re going to make enough changes to even get up to an average game that I can’t recommend.

I feel like this is a game where a small team was overly ambitious. There are seven people in the credits and five different modeling groups who seem to be available in asset stores. It seems like much of this game was pre-bought assets. The shame of it is if they focused on making a shorter and more focused game a team of 7 people can make something good, but instead they tried to make a massive game, and even two and a half hours in I’m just not having fun with any part of it. I can’t even get past the combat, and I don’t really want to.

The good news is I got a review copy of a game, the first time I’ve ever done that and it makes me feel good. The bad news, I played this game for almost three hours, and that’s something that I’ll have to live with for the rest of my life. I promise to my followers, I won’t review just anything that comes my way. I might review weaker games because of curator connect, but I had to review the first game I was offered, didn’t I? Now my new goal is to find a game I like in curator connect.

You can't play that game. Poor optimization, clumsy movement, and a lot of bugs. It's just that this game is not playable. It is not worth buying it, for this price you can get definitely better and finished games.

I have never played a game so aggressively bad. The writing is in english in the sense that the words are there, they're just not in an understandable order. The world just disappears sometimes and you fall through it. There is no mouse lock and accidentally clicking off the screen freezes your game. The only way to travel through the town is to take giant staircases into the sky and fall into the area you want to go to. Speaking of areas, they're not clearly zoned so the music and text announces a new area will play over each other and you're stuck in a constant loop looking around wondering why THE FOREST ZONE MUSIC AND TOWN MUSIC ARE PLAYING OVER EACH OTHER AND THERE'S A BLACK BLOB ON THE SCREEN AN AMALGAMATION OF THE WORDS "TOWN" AND "FOREST" OVERLAPPING EACH OTHER FOREVER AND VLADMIR CANT FIND HIS CHICKENS AND I ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ SURE AINT GOING TO BECAUSE THE ONLY WAY QUESTS ARE CONVEYED TO YOU IS IN BROKEN WORD SALAD ENGLISH SO I DONT CARE ABOUT HIS CHICKENS AND THIS GAME IS JUST THE UNITY STORE BROUGHT TO LIFE AND NO SHOULD PAY MONEY FOR THIS GAME THE DEVS ARE ABSOLUTE SCOUNDRELS AND THIEVES AND THEY SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF THEMSELVES MY SLOW BUT NICE FRIEND THOUGHT I WOULD LIKE THIS AND GIFTED IT TO ME AND I CANT RETURN IT NOW AND IM GONNA HAVE TO RUN IT THIRTY MINUTES A DAY JUST SO I CAN TELL HIM I BEAT IT AND ENJOYED IT BECAUSE IT. I usually don't want to jump straight to the negatives of a game, but this is just bad. Let me highlight some of the issues for ya.

-Terrible English subtitles, and even worse Shakespearean slang.

-Stock models, stock animations, stock scenery, stock sounds, stock music, stock everything.

-The majority of the quests are just filler that you have to complete in order to progress towards the main objective of the game. It wouldn't sound so bad if they weren't boring, repetitive, or annoying.

-The combat is nothing but button mashing, terrible hit registration, and getting screwed in an enemy gang-bang. The, "shield," bar to boot the health bar regenerates too quickly on enemies, making fights all the more tedious.

-The loading system when you die doesn't work correctly, so you'd have to restart your game in order to go to where you last saved.

-As far as I can tell, the game is incompletable because of invisible walls restricting one of your characters to proceed, unless there's some obscure excuse, quest, or something I was missing out on. Second, the game itself is imcomplete, since you can leave the intended boundaries of the map and explore an entire unfinished section that stretches on like a ♥♥♥♥♥♥' desert, not to mention being able to fall out of the map.

No, I did not buy this game, it was given to me by the developer. However, it feels like I found this ♥♥♥♥♥♥ loot up a troll's ass in a Skyrim dungeon, so I'd be more than happy to shove it back up it's rectum. In conclusion, don't pay for this unfinished game; that'd be your best bet. To the developer, I'm here for entertainingly insightful feedback, so please don't get a hair up your ass with my comments. Release a finished product with polish, creativity, and optimization handled properly, and this game'll be fine at best. Have a good day, ladies and gents.
