Darkest Hour: A Hearts of Iron Game

'33 or '36 start date
Any point of doing a '33 start for Germany? Does it make the game more interesting or the pre-war part just longer?

It gives you much more time to build up as ANY country, so if you're fine with waiting an hour before war starts, go right ahead.:steamhappy:

Is it a more interesting game starting at '33?

If you would love buildups, especially if you want a big navy for the kriegsmarine, then 33 is definitely for you. The waiting time is something you'll need to endure though, and just like Hitler, you might get yourself impatient waiting for Saar, Rhineland, Anschluss and might go for some early small wars which can be fun.

does the 33' start work as intended? Does the war still start at 39 via events and what not? just would hate to play through 6 years of the game to have the ai go off the rails.

Yes they do work as intended. They just basically added some events from 33 to 36. From 36 onwards, the original event files takes over. And as said previously, it'll be quite a boring wait. The only major event as far as i'm concerned is Xinjiang, China civil war minigame, Manchu states coring decisions, return of Saarbrucken. Overall boring if you want events but for buildup, it's good!

You have the choice to go Communist Germany, for a completely AH play.

I do recommend getting a mod to provide Communist Germany with events, though.

Somewhat - war tends to happen sometime prior to september 39 when playing historically, but you'll usually see the events happening in the proper order (just not quite the exact timing).
If you're playing Germany, it's usually you who control the timing.

33 scenario is honestly recommended for NatChi, or possibly ComChi - mind you, both can be hilariously frustrating, but rewarding. (Forget time for build up, though, you'll need to finish a couple of wars first).

33 scenario is also recommended for Japan as you get some events as well (such as allying with China vs USSR). You can also end the civil war early as Com/NatChi in the '33 scenario. You can choose to DoW with USSR (good luck, lol) as NatChi in '33 over Xinjiang.

Countries I prefer to play '33:

Germany
NatChi
ComChi
Japan
Czechslovakia (much better odds of surviving vs Germany in '33 start)

For you to ally with China however, you need the Chinese to declare war on Xinjiang. I don't see them doing that at all, they usually forget Xinjiang. Also, spoilers. China gets to annex Manchuria by events when they've allied with the Japanese.

with URSS, Germany, Japan, if you start in 1933 you can conquest US before the 1938.
then it becomes a very calm game and you can aim for the total conquest of the world.

even with fascist Mexico you can do interesting things but it takes a lot of experience.

??? how can you conquer Usa with german before 38??? the transport ships you have at that moment have a very limited range. Have tried to pass that with the result that the Transporter and transported just dissapear for you. So they sink and ..just gone! Trying to use transport plains will be equal difficult. Or is it something i have missed?

(iirc) As Japan you get offmap IC and an uncancellable trade agreement equivalent to what you would get from owning Machuria, and Nat China gets negative offmap IC simulating the transfer of industry to Japan. It symbolizes 'symbolic' return of territory. You can also choose to not agree to the deal and face communist supported rebel revolts if you wish.

With regards to allying with China iirc we made it so that the AI has a higher chance of doing so if the human player is Japan and choose strike north, but it may have been reverted.

Even without the alliance there are at least 20 events for Japan in the Strike North pathway iirc.

You need to do some island hopping, Ireland and Greenland maybe.

I'll give Japan '33 a shot - thanks for advise

Easy to say. Germany has prommised independence to denmark and so do englang. To conquer us before 38 you need to start clearing way early i guess, Have tried millitary acsess or a way to attack at iceland as first jumping point. You are so locked by starting deals. Might open later but when?. Easy when you have done it before and knows the way. Seriously 0 chamce for millitary acess and no way to attack. Not starting good for me.

you can say is gamey, and yes is absolute gamey.
but you cannot say is a bad start, because in normal difficulty and furious AI is the best start possible.
and you can conquest all the world without editing the date of endgame.
