I do recommend getting a mod to provide Communist Germany with events, though.
Somewhat - war tends to happen sometime prior to september 39 when playing historically, but you'll usually see the events happening in the proper order (just not quite the exact timing).
If you're playing Germany, it's usually you who control the timing.
33 scenario is honestly recommended for NatChi, or possibly ComChi - mind you, both can be hilariously frustrating, but rewarding. (Forget time for build up, though, you'll need to finish a couple of wars first).
Countries I prefer to play '33:
Germany
NatChi
ComChi
Japan
Czechslovakia (much better odds of surviving vs Germany in '33 start)
then it becomes a very calm game and you can aim for the total conquest of the world.
With regards to allying with China iirc we made it so that the AI has a higher chance of doing so if the human player is Japan and choose strike north, but it may have been reverted.
Even without the alliance there are at least 20 events for Japan in the Strike North pathway iirc.
You need to do some island hopping, Ireland and Greenland maybe.
you can say is gamey, and yes is absolute gamey.
but you cannot say is a bad start, because in normal difficulty and furious AI is the best start possible.
and you can conquest all the world without editing the date of endgame.
