It'd be nice to play a superpower, but every time I start as US, UK, Japan, etc, I just look at their starting roster of units that I'd have to reorganize and just go "screw it, too much work". And every time I get Germany to the point of attacking the USSR I get bored while forming the lines in preparation. :)
Nationalist China is also a lot of fun. If you can with the war against Japan early on, you can really change history. Communist China is even more interesting, but very hard to pull off, since you start so small.
I have played Germany many times simply because it more or less is the country that the game centers around. Plenty of events and the action quickly gets going. It is difficult to get bored.
I also like Soviet Union for being straightforward in strategy. You know the germans will be coming sooner or later, so just prepare with troops and create more industry. Then defend your homecountry for the first few months and counterattack when the germans are stalled by mud and siberian cold.
USA is my choice for when I feel like saving the world from Totalitarianism and in general just want an ordinary outcome of WWII. Just sit back and let the first few years go past. Make a cup of coffee or tea while the world burns, then step in when Imperial Japan makes the mistake of screwing with your Pearl Harbor-base. Wipeout their navy, conquer their islands while you prepare to save Europe from the nazis. Then invade in Normandy, rush to Berlin, secure Europe, then atomic bomb Japan and end the war. Then continue with New World Order 2 mod and play out the cold war.
I don't think Hearts of Iron in general is meant to be played with minor nations. You are usually to weak to be able to do anything. I tried playing as New Zealand and that was a dread to do. I could barely build or research anything not to mention that it barely has any events. Boredom.
i plan to play as Britain and Germany eventually, but I also like the idea of the guy who posted at the top playing as a smaller 2nd tier nation so I'm tempted to try that next, maybe Spain.
Cool game
