No Options / Menu / Settings
Hi, Im playing MI3 for the first time over steam (played it 20 years ago) and on a WIN10 system. I wonder if there is some kind of main menu in the game (like in part 1 & 2) for settings... for sound options, saving/loading games, ... ?? I tried almost everything but can not find anything :(
Can anybody help me pls?

Ctrl + F5 doesn´t work to me. Only the whole screen disapears. I still can hear the sound but the screen is gone, i am just on my normal desktop.

If it is that complicate to save the game, it is realy crap. Sorry, but its not possible in this time to make such a creepy menue.

Can i get my money back?

F1 opens the ScummVM menu, you can save there.

I have the same issue. I am playing The Course of Monkey Island on Steam in a Windows 10 PC, but I don't know how to save the game, or how to exit the game. (At the end I closed the tab but lost my progress)

As mentioned in the post I just quoted, the F1 key will open a Menu where you can save or exit the game. At least that is how it works for me too.

This isn't working for me, like the others, it just puts my laptop into sleep mode

Okay for anyone that is still struggling with this, I've FINALLY figured it out. I downloaded ScummVM installer, but that didn't work as it wouldn't let me import the game and didn't talk to it through steam, but I found info on the ScummVM website. Though my computer is a windows machine, I have to treat it like a Mac, so its cntrl+alt+F5 to make the in game menu pop up. This then lets me click a save button. MAJOR game flaw to not have the basic controls outlined somewhere easy because its been a nightmare figuring them out, but now I have it, Im excited to play the game.

The problem for most old games in steam is that it´s just an excecutable of the game, sometimes not even the latest patched version of the game. As such, controls are the same as they were in ye old thymes. In your case, using a laptop, those controls have a particular comand attach to them, in your case sleep mode. You need to change the option of how the keyboard reacts to certain comands if they conflict with older games, pretty high requierement to load older games on laptops.

The problem here is not that a game made in 1997 that came with a manual couldn´t predict how technology would adapt or that 30 years later people would still want to play it, the problem is that companies just want to get more money from old software and steam doesn´t force a particular type of care on this products. So in the end it´s just that, an old excecutable not entirely up to running on modern computers. Personally I advice anyone downloading any game made before 2005 to look online for the manual as soon as you made the choice to buy it, then look for info on the game and on the version on steam. And above all, understand GOG/Steam versions will always provide a worst experience, mostly because neither Dos-Box or ScumMV are updated on them, every game is launched on a very old setting for those programs.

There´s a high chance than in a few years, every single game on Steam and GOG requiering those softwares (fan made softwares I may add) simply stop working, and you can see how in forums for games like this on Steam each year there are more and more people having issues running the games.

Personally, I think steam should first and foremost update the version of Dos-Box and ScumMV they use, secondly to ask companies to at least provide the manuals for this games (not all have them) and then form some short of rules about uploading older software, like "it needs to be the last updated version of the game", "it needs to provide a setting menu from the launcher to map comands" "it needs to provide concrete information on the store page about how the game runs, what extra software uses" and any other type of rule that guarantess we don´t get subpart products. It´s really sad, but there´s tons of Steam older games that I have that worked so badly that eventually I just got the game "someother form" and then use Steam as launcher for the non steam version that I payed for. Which is also a debate to have, like, should we pay DIsney for buying the 30 year old Monkey Island 3 when all they did was get the IP for free when they bought Star Wars and then launch an old 1997 excecutable on steam with no real support?

It´s all a very complex issue and as long as Steam´s policy around it continues to be "whatever" it doesn´t seem to have a solution. Like I said, a burden to the players, but be sure to learn everything you can about the game before making the Steam/GOG purchase.

Hola Cesar. Me gustaría saber si pudiste arreglar este problema. Acabo de comprar el juego y me pasa lo mismo que a ti, no hay menú de opciones ni forma de guardar la partida. Gracias. Un saludo.

Thank you for the comprehensive reply. I had figured this was likely the case. Disheartening to hear it confirmed - I totally agree, if steam want to market the games then they should require a certain amount of updated support or guidance. However, I am glad at least that the community are so proactive in finding and discussing work around. I've actually finished the game now and loved it as I did all of them so far (I grew up playing them so a great nostalgia kick).
Yeah, I don´t know why they don´t send some love to old games launches. A lot of old games are way better than modern ones, shame the devs don´t think the same and they just give us crappy ports.

Glad you could make it work, I´m also replaying the whole series and I appreciate all games are here on Steam, even if 3,4 and 5 are just that, poor ports with no care.

Hello fellows! Try with the F1 key (in my keyboard it works...!)
PanishX Jun 30, 2023 @ 7:03pm
For those who use a Mac with a touch bar, just press and hold the "fn" key, then press F1 on the bar to open the menu.
