Honestly, you should have both DW8 & DW9 ; but if you need to choose one; I would say go with DW9. Because it's a new thing, DLC are still coming, and maybe you could enjoy it.
Keep in mind though, that both of these games are boring quickly ; I loved them before but sadly, I got bored very quickly with both of them. :/
Or you can try the free version of DW9 & buy DW8 :) Because clearing every stories of every characters in DW9...Well it would take a loooooot of times.
IF they add a Empire mode to the game it would be really great and would fit to the open world setting
Dw9 had to be different. And it is fun. It had its bugs and may take getting used to. But honestly i cant go back to instanced hack and slashes after dw9.
Since 9. Dw8, WO4 and Fate, excel relink instanced came out. While fun to play for story, little replay value. And get boring.
Dw8 is good but dw9 is just as good, it has more replay and 27 months later still getting monthly content updates.
DW8
-A lot of pick and choose screens
-You get to modify your equipment/bodyguards only before you start a mission
-Ambition mode( different missions that are timed and gradually increases difficulty until you reset)
-Also you are able to upgrade and train your officers in Ambition Mode
-Bodyguards
-Animals
-Graphics are okay, but you can definitely tell it is old
-Controller support is meh(I had to figure out how to set up my controller to work with the game)
-Difficulty setting: if you increase the difficulty level, enemies would frequently block your attacks as well as do a ton of damage
-I feel like DW8 is more fast paced
DW9
-Missions are spread throughout the map. You can skip to the main part, but it's best you do the side missions.
-Not really a fast completion as there are a lot to do (Unless again, you focus on main missions)
-You could play for hours, but then the excitement dies down. But you may find yourself going back and doing a couple of missions later
-Graphics improved. I love using photo mode, but sometimes when getting close with nature, it's a bit disappointing
-Motivated to finish each chapter because the cutscenes look great.
-Might get disappointed with empty areas in the map( Hopefully we get to make use of them in future updates)
-Bodyguard and Animal features are there
-They still do updates and improve the game
-all features (Arena, Speed killing officers, Defend area) are spread throughout the map so you don't have to go through separate screens to chose a game mode.
-You are able to adjust your equipment as much as you like(in and out of battle)
-Online multiplayer( I mean it's there, but I never use it)
-Difficulty setting: Higher levels will make enemies deal more damage and could possibly kill you in 3 strikes
-Had no problem connecting my controller
-DW9, I find myself taking time completing a story since I can do other things during game
play (editing my hideaway, improving officer relationships, fishing, etc).
I may have missed some details for both games. Hopefully this helps :D
+Character models and moveset animation have been improved alot in DW9.
+ Combat is smooth if your computer can run it.
+ It has one of the fastest horse I ride in video games.
+ Camera options for you to take screenshot of your character. You will love this if you are a modded skyrim player. Taking screenshot in 4k is great.
+Not very grindy, It is friendly to casual player if you don't have time to play.
- system requirement to run 4k is a bit demanding
- Multiplayer Very Long Loading times and randomly kicked!
