Solution to King Rat issue
I found this through a link someone else linked and it seems to have resolved the issue.

1. Start the game
2. Choose Options from the main menu
3. Under Video, click the VSync checkbox and accept the changes
4. Return to the main menu
5. Click Options again
6. Deselect VSync checkbox
7. Return to the main menu and play the level.

There is a glitch that slows down the game otherwise and you will not be able to build at a normal speed. With this toggle, you can undo that glitch and survive the initial encounter.

Hope this helps :)

... Or you can install the balancing patch that I made to address issues introduced in patch 1.5, like compaign and skirmish maps that were not adjusted for new build times. Just saying :)

I managed to beat it not editing anything. Only took about 4 tries.

That's hardcode. You are playing a much harder game than what was originally designed. But somethimes it is fun :)

Started a new playthrough and beat it first go. Seemed pretty easy.

So you don't enable Vsync, you turn it on and then off again? I thought the whole point was to leave Vsync on to limit your framerate, as building speed is tied to it and goes slower the higher your FPS.

Just use the wizards guild and towers, I managed to complete it after a few tries.

Does anyone know if this “fix” would work with a 144hz monitor? When I vcync other games it doesn’t let them go above 144fps. I guess I could manually put the monitor on 60hz and vsync if I get completely stuck on a mission in the future. For now... I kind of like how difficult Rat King and the Dragon missions were.

I also would like to know how to fix this problem with high end monitors/GPUs. I used nVidia Control Panel to frame limit the game to 60fps, and it allowed me to get past the Rat King level, but now I'm on the expansion and the second level in there seems to be impossible. When comparing to YouTube videos, the game I'm playing is *way* harder than the game the video was recorded with. When they are facing some dragonlings, I'm facing two dragons simultaneously.

I tried full screen, windowed, with and without vSync, toggled on/off like the various tips around here say to do. Nothing seems to fix the problem of being overrun rapidly.
