What platform are you both playing on? Are you both on Steam or is anyone on Epic?
Do you see any error codes when the message shows up? If yes, what is this exactly?
So we can ensure you have the best connection, can you please follow the steps in the links below, and reach out to your ISP to open your NAT?
Troubleshooting Network Connectivity
Clear download cache
Can you please BOTH ensure your NAT (Network Address Translation) is set to Open or Moderate? You will need to contact your ISP or router manufacturer for information on how to perform these steps.
If you are still experiencing connection issues after performing the steps in the links above and opening your NAT. Can you please tell us the following information?
- What country are you currently living in?
- Steam Download Region (Steam Settings, Downloads)
- What is your internet speed? Internet Speed Test[www.speedtest.net]
- Are you using a VPN?
- What is your NAT set to?

My friend had a BETA update installed and once the BETA updates were set to None and removed she and I were able to join each others sessions without problems.
Same thing happens when MacBook is inviting Ubuntu laptop as well. Cannot find solution.
Please note there is a way to join from Ubuntu laptop and play arcade mode with people over internet.

Could you please all try using the cross-play branch to see if this works?
To do this:
- Launch Steam
- From the Library section, right-click on Overcooked! 2 and select Properties from the menu.
- Select the 'Betas' tab
- From the drop-down menu, choose the crossplay_branch - Branch for crossplay with EGS
- Allow the version to install
- Launch the game and use the T17 menu to add each other's T17 usernames
- Invite each other to a game and get cooking!
