"Game could not be joined"
My friend and I can't play together. We can't join each other's lobby and get the "Game could not be joined" error. We cleared DNS, which worked once, but now we're getting the same error even after clearing DNS. We have checked that our games are up to date, ran as administrator, checked devices for updates, restarted devices, and checked that the game is allowed through firewall. None of this has helped. I'm not sure what to do at this point and am beyond irritated that we each spent money on a game we can't even play together.

Hey Xephrit,

We're sorry to hear you're having this issue.

What platform are you both playing on? Are you both on Steam or is anyone on Epic?
Do you see any error codes when the message shows up? If yes, what is this exactly?

So we can ensure you have the best connection, can you please follow the steps in the links below, and reach out to your ISP to open your NAT?

Troubleshooting Network Connectivity
Clear download cache

Can you please BOTH ensure your NAT (Network Address Translation) is set to Open or Moderate? You will need to contact your ISP or router manufacturer for information on how to perform these steps.

If you are still experiencing connection issues after performing the steps in the links above and opening your NAT. Can you please tell us the following information?
  1. What country are you currently living in?
  2. Steam Download Region (Steam Settings, Downloads)
  3. What is your internet speed? Internet Speed Test[www.speedtest.net]
  4. Are you using a VPN?
  5. What is your NAT set to?
We look forward to hearing back from you.

Regards,
Team17 Support

I know this is a bit late but... Try checking if you or your friend haven't added any BETA updates to your Overcooked 2 Game via steam

https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/728880/view/2963913643480907536

My friend had a BETA update installed and once the BETA updates were set to None and removed she and I were able to join each others sessions without problems.
Hello, I'm using Ubuntu 24 and when I try to invite my friend in the same house with Mackbook he cannot join the game with me, I tried with Proton GE but it doesn't work.
Same thing happens when MacBook is inviting Ubuntu laptop as well. Cannot find solution.

Please note there is a way to join from Ubuntu laptop and play arcade mode with people over internet.

Can you please confirm for us if you're both playing on Steam or if one of you is using Epic or another launcher?

Hi cute_moodeng,

Thank you for your reply.

Could you please all try using the cross-play branch to see if this works?

To do this:
  1. Launch Steam
  2. From the Library section, right-click on Overcooked! 2 and select Properties from the menu.
  3. Select the 'Betas' tab
  4. From the drop-down menu, choose the crossplay_branch - Branch for crossplay with EGS
  5. Allow the version to install
  6. Launch the game and use the T17 menu to add each other's T17 usernames
  7. Invite each other to a game and get cooking!
Do let us know if you have any issues!

Regards,
Team17 Support
