It was working for me may be around early this year, I stopped playing until a few days ago I wanted to play the new update; updated Steam and the game, then Dualshock 4 stopped working on both of my iMac and MacBook Pro. I've tried everything including turn off PS4 support in controller setting, reinstall Steam, removing of Bluetooth preference file and reboot.
Now note that I've tried removing Bluetooth preference file and reboot, so the following method may only work after that:
- Connect your Dualshock 4 with USB cable
- Launch the game, confirm it works with USB cable
- Quit the game, quite Steam
- Connect Dualshock 4 with Bluetooth
- Launch the game and enjoy!
Same result on both of my iMac and MacBook Pro.
I bought this game as it's top of everyone's list of best "couch co-op" game, and it's disappointing to see that a couch co-op game still doesn't support standard controllers 2 years after launch 😢
In all the various threads, I keep seeing "it's a problem between Steam and the OS", but I have plenty of Steam games that handle my controllers just fine, and plenty of Unity games in Steam that handle controllers just fine...?!
I would think that the point of using Unity and the Steam platform would be to get support for this kind of stuff out-of-the-box? Why are we still struggling with something that has been fixed by many other studios?
My particular case involves:
- both wired and wireless Xbox 360 controllers
- on macOS Catalina
- using the "360Controller" Github project's drivers
- I have allowed "Input Monitoring" for Overcooked 2 in "Security & Privacy"
- with and without Steam's "Xbox Configuration Support"
- with and without Big Picture mode
after re-installing "360Controller", my official Microsoft Xbox 360 wireless controllers DO work!
my off-brand (Amazon Basics...) wired Xbox 360 controllers don't, though, even when I tell the driver to spoof their signature.
Oh well, at least one pair is working, but was hoping to play this game with more than 2 players. Time to buy even more controllers?
After going through all posts and trying everything that has been suggested (without any success but a little raging over this frustrating issue) this has finally worked!
When I plug in another DS4 via cable it disconnects the first wireless DS4 and replaces it. The wireless one connects again though as 2nd player.
We're glad to hear you have managed to find solutions to this issue.
Thank you for sharing these also.

Please fix!
Sadly, these aren't really solutions...
It's still strange that we can play any other game with any other official / off-brand controller setup, and it simply works, but Overcooked -- a couch-coop game par excellence -- built on Unity -- which comes with universal Input Management built-in -- still has to jump through hoops to only get controllers working if we sacrifice a chicken. And even then, all controllers simply show up as "Gamepad", with gamepad icons instead of XBox icons, which is super confusing for my kids...
Why can't I simply plug in 4 controllers, and have those controllers be recognized by Overcooked, especially since that exact same setup is recognized by Steam / Big Picture / every other controller-enabled game I own...?!?!
We've passed the report to the team for further investigation.
Apologies for any inconvenience this may cause in the meantime.
Regards,
Team17 Support.
- Connect you Dualshock controllers via Bluetooth
- Configure the game with the keyboard (dual player, keyboard input)
- Use Enjoyable.app and map both controllers to keyboard keystrokes (the app recognizes and maps each controllers' D-Pads, Sticks and all buttons) and simply tell it to input a key exactly as the game shows each keystroke for each player. With the app open, and your controllers connected, just press buttons and the app will recognize them and those can be mapped as different keyboard keys.
- Enjoy!
Hope this helps.
Super bummed. Wish I had seen this thread before. Just bought overcooked 2 to play over the holidays with 4x 8BitDo Zero2 controllers, connected via bluetooth as DS4 controllers. No dice.
Eventually got local 2-player split-keyboard mode working with @Nico's Enjoyable.app key-mapping workaround. But there's no way that will work for local 4-player mode.
It's been 3 years @Team17 Support please fix!!! Really regretting purchase :(
MacBook Pro (16-inch 2019)
MacOS. Big Suf. 11.6.1
Steam: Built Dec 16 2021
Having the exact same issue, tried to play with friends during the holiday, controllers don't work on Mac even when working with all other games. Overcooked is one of my favorite games, very sad to be requesting a refund :(
Hello, any news on this topic ? i specifically purchased a controller to play this game and it just does not work ( offical Xbox controller an mac mini M1)
