Overcooked! 2

Overcooked! 2

As impossibly difficult as the predecessor?
Overcooked: Non-violent co-op game sounded perfect for a family game. However, it isnt: playing with my children (age 9-12) we are stuck for over a year. We manage to obtain 2 stars in most levels, but in order to progress the story we need 3 stars, which we almost never manage. :(

(Note: It is good that the 3 stars are not easy to reach, but is bad that they block the story entirely. My son is so disappointed now that he hates Overcooked now and rather wants to play easier games like Magicka or Trine?!)

So I would buy Overcooked2 immediately, if only the difficulty is not a prohibiting as in Overcooked. I understand that people like a challenge, but why block the story entirely? 2 stars to progress should be enough! Also, it prohibits many interesting game mechanisms: There is no point in grabbing a fire extinguisher, just restart the level right away - which is sad.

Furthermore, is the controller steering more accurate in Overcooked2? We often misplace items due to the controls being slightly askew in this game (works fine in other games).

From what I've read it seems the biggest issue is that people find it too easy.

Too easy! Waaay too easy.

Magicka is easy? That's news for me. Sounds more like Overcooked is just not a game for your kid - nothing wrong with that.

It IS much too easy. Me and my brother beat every level on our first playthrough pretty much every time. Even the final boss level - it took us many hours and tries in the original game - we did it with 22 seconds to spare in the sequel. Don't worry about difficulty!

Great news! I'll buy it! :)

Are you making sure to communicate TC? Since the game forces you to divvy up tasks effective communication between the players is essential. It's nothing too complex, just things like "I need plates" or "I need cucumbers" or "I'll wash dishes". Sometimes it helps to have a strategy before you start, like "at the beginning I'll pull out a bunch of tomatoes and put them here".

I was playing the sequel with my 10-year old nephew last weekend and we were doing pretty well even though it was his first time playing a game like this.

As someone who actually found the first one impossibly difficult, I'm happy to say that Overcooked 2 is actually easy enough to play even as a solo player (the story modes, at least). I've been having fun with the story mode on my own, and there were stages that took a bit of a retry, but I haven't encountered one that made the experience torturous so far.

Thank! Sounds great!

@Terotrous: Yes, we did communicate and planned - and we did manage 3 stars a few rare times, but mostly I achieved the 3 stars in single player mode on my own in order to progress the story.

Anyway, it is good that the new game does not block the story, so we will buy it!

This game does have star requirements to progress the story, but it is much more lenient. In the first game, you were only allowed to miss 10 stars total to get to the end. In this one, I think you could get through the majority of the game with only two stars in each level (6-1 for example, which is the 31st story mission, has a star requirement of only 66), though this game is notoriously generous with their three star ratings in many levels, so it shouldn't be an issue.

@SmilingTurle, if you are somewhat technical you can dig around in the save files for the game, at least for Overcooked 1, haven't tried for 2. It's a simple XML file and is pretty self-explanatory. (Obligatory warning, back it up first!) If your kids are having a lot or trouble but really want to progress in the first game you could make it so they got 3 stars on a lot of levels just so they can progress onwards.

There may be some naysayers who say its cheating, to just practice because it should be easy, or maybe even that you should get good enough to get 3 stars because later levels are harder. However, at the end of the day it's your game, you paid for it, and you should be able to do what you want to with it!

Overcooked 2 is much easier. My wife and I got three stars on all the levels of the previous game, but I liked the lower difficulty on this much more. Less frustrating, and if we -wanted- a challenge we could just arbitrarily decide to get a certain score.

However, the devs just now absolutely lost their minds and added four star scores that are complete BS. I beat all three Dark Souls games and the co-op scores are insane, as in only someone whose mind was disconnected from reality would require scores like that.

Not sure if you saw this, but the devs apparently do not have the game reporting scores anywhere centrally (hence no leaderboards) so to decide what scores to use for the 4th star they literally just asked people for their best scores on the steam forums. They really should have just rolled out an update that adds a global leader board per level, per game mode, per player count, and then let it collect data for a week.
