Honestly the first thing you should do with any DLC unit is to do it's quest right away on the easiest difficulty just so you can get more in case you lose it somehow.
For example Golden SUMO requires you to initiate a support attack with Harry Ord iirc. That means putting him into a Raid Group or making him a Warship Captain.
I only ran Warship groups my entire time playing and trying to put an underleveled character as your Captain just sucks, their command range is pathetic.
...So I just had to suck it up and open up a raid group just to get it done like a week or two after the DLC dropped.
But for something like a God or Master Gundam just... oof. I've done these missions dozens and dozens of times and I've probably only gotten 2 or 3 spares of each.
Depends on your patience.
It's also the first and only game I have all achievements on with Steam, and one of very few games I 100% as far as in-game completion % goes.
I used to be a fan of Gundam when I was younger but lost interest around when SEED came out on TV, then I never really saw much of Gundam for probably over a decade. I went back to watch IBO and 00 because of this game. And I at least enjoyed IBO a bit.
Now I've even bought my first Gunpla kits recently... Built myself an HG Hazel Custom and an Astaroth Origin.
Nowadays its easier to get Gunpla and by some fluke we got an SD Gundam game localized for the West.
As for which characters you're going for, my best guesses are either Orga Itsuka or Eugene Sevenstark. Both have 2 versions in Crossrays but I don't remember either of them having high evasion to start.
This game in a nutshell: Destroy all enemies. Cute in your 3 campaign, by the 8th you are just button mashing to get attacks done fast and see the story progress. Already watched the anime? Well f*** you, play this repetitive slog or GTFO.
I mean you described most TRPGs aside from the difficulty part. Cross Rays is definitely one of the easiest ones out there.
What am I doing in Disgaea series after the first 10-20 hours? Just button mashing through attacks with everything cranked up to max speed or just totally skipping animations. The game still provides challenge but the further you go the more of the game is a slog of levels that are impossible to lose on because you've got at least one character that can't be hurt by any enemies until you reach deeper levels.
Fire Emblem only gets harder as it goes along but I don't like the balance in those games. Grinding is limited to supplement the difficulty and it means that grinding is just absolutely not fun in those games. Most of them didn't really even let you grind at all, newer ones let you do it but it'll literally take you a week of grinding to go beyond your first master class. It especially sucks if you want to change classes just because you messed up and picked one that didn't suit your character as well. It's so bad that a lot of people actually would rather start the game over and play through it all again to min-max than to spend that time grinding.
Anyways, I am looking forward to the new DLC since it's going to crank up the difficulty with many levels of Inferno. Even my level 99 Mobile Suits and Pilots will be having trouble keeping up because of the new level and stat caps.
Also have you at least tried Extra Difficulty? It's not much but it's harder than Normal.
This is also why I started leveling up weak suits to still have some fun with the game. An M1 Astray can be about just as good as a maxed out Strike Freedom Gundam if you put the time into it. I'm still working on leveling a Linear Gun Tank to OHKO the post-game boss.
Ot at least better mission structure. As it is I´m struggling to finish 00, which I already watched.
In my opinion it just sounds like you need to go play XCOM 2 again. ;)
Cross Rays could use some more difficulty but that's what I'm hoping the next DLC is bringing, I mean the center feature of that DLC is a multi-layered difficulty mode to support a new level cap.
I don't know what you'd expect out of Gundam as far as classes go... They're not designed with classes in mind beyond what is already there in Cross Rays, which is whether they are ranged or melee focused, or otherwise have special weapons.
