Thats at least the way it was in older titles.
Its really specific and only useful if you set up certain groups to be a main attacker with multiple supporters.
Also, some players like to use the junk parts to give themselves more of a challenge since it prevents level ups for the unit and pilot.
thats wrong. i (and some others) did some testing and there is no XP sharing at all
short version:
2 characters lvl 1 in 2 MS lvl 99 (neither leader or master), warship lvl 99 with captain 99 (and no other crew)
if 1 character kills 1 enemy on its own, he gets 12XP
if 2 characters WS-linkup kill 1 enemy, the same character gets 22 XP
if the other characters has status quo, the same character from befor still only gets 22 XP
what i was able to proof is that when the character in question pilots a weaker MS (in my test lvl 1) he was able to get 42 XP instead of the 22 XP
the weaker the pilot stats of the pilot (i.e. a pilot with avarage 100 stats gets more XP than one with 300 stats, even if both are the same level), and the weaker the MS they pilot (again, primary stats) the more XP they gain from killing on their own, in support or in any linkup attack.

edit:
just to add here:
the test above with all lvl 1 MS, WS raid linkup with X characters gave Y XP for the same character:
1 character: 29XP
2 character: 42XP
3 character: 48XP
(status quo doesn't change anything, no mater how many have it... except for the character in question, that he would get only 0 XP, ofcourse)
edit2: ofcouse, the same was tested with MS and junk parts, same results (with different numbers)
