As for what else makes this different, this is only Gundam. SRW is Gundam and many other mecha series, largely super robot. Not to mention SRW is an original crossover story, whereas G Gen recently has only followed the stories of the TV series, OVA’s, films, games, and manga/novels.
Gameplay-wise, they essentially function the same.
Units are numbered and limited in choice. You want to use super cool looking enemy units? not going to happen in SRW (impossible without hack).
G-Gen is all about unlocking units, from hero Gundam to big ugly villain MA. Anything you unlocked can be used in game no matter what. You can even pick what warship to use as well.
G Gen is more like a sandbox and also usually little story to no story at all. You collect, build, and manage your own team. The best feature I've always loved is being able to modify your BGM and this new title series allows you to modify even story characters as long as you've scouted them.
Meanwhile Super Robots are playing story only, and once the story ends you starts from the beginning with no memory of what you have in previous play.
So simply SD Gundam has more endgame than Super Robots.
G Gen: You make your own teams with all the units and your characters. New units are created by your old units. Kind of evolution and collection.
SRW: The robots are fixed. The maps are fixed, you cannot go back to the previous stages.
