Both also have Glory of the Losers versions with extra weapons, so use those if you want the versatility.
Bro if model kits like Heine Destiny Gundam can make it in the game the Sandrock custom ew can has the shield from the model kit.
Overall, I really shouldn't care that much, but it just so happened I developed Sandrock for my team and ended up with EW Custom variant which I quickly had to dispose of due to its lacking attacks. Was a bit annoying to level it up with such short range.
Whining that they should change suits just so you don't have to adapt feels very defeatist to me.
The kits are based on how the units are originally designed, not how they would be in the scenarios in the game.
The point in general is that the unit just simply isn't fun, considering it's should be the most advanced of all the variants.
See how this variant is presented in all other games to see the difference. For example:

The difference is in Glory of the Loser manga, Wing Zero still has its Wing Shield. That means it can use neo-bird mode, which would be a significant benefit in terms of gameplay. The manga changed the story of the TV series quite a bit, in part making all the Katoki redesigns part of the original story.
