Don't know Gundam but love turn based strategy games, worth it?
Would I enjoy it if I never even heard about Gundam? What's the gameplay like? And considering the price, how much content/replayability is there? How much playtime could you get?

Do you like mecha (giant robots)? Do you enjoy war dramas? Do you like Fire Emblem?

As far as replayability, there are over 650 units to collect. You can easily go over 100 hours playing this game.

If you like SRPG in general and dont mind anime designs for characters and Mecha then sure.
The stories can feel a bit abridged if you dont know the source material but are good enough to set up the stages, even if you dont know the series its based on.
The game has 82 scenarios to play and if you want to unlock all the units/pilots and such you are looking at easily 120+ gours of content.

Only think is don't go in expecting a turn based strategy game as deep as Battle Brothers or other such examples. While it is a solid little strategy game it is primarily a game made for the purposes of fan appreciation, so just go in knowing that.

Track down a copy of G-Gen Overworld on PSP, get the english patch installed, and play a bit of that. That's the best way to see if you'll like G-Gen's core mechanics.

It's fan service game so strategy is quite simple but not too bad, about play time this game have a lot of grinding too if you want to collect the mech and upgrade them.this will take you 130-300 hours depend on what you wanna do int this game.

you gonna have to grinding on some of same map over and over again in several difficult after end game, just like other japanese game do.grinding out of hell like monster hunter.

think of it of Pokemon but robot, gotta get em all.

Based on previous games, if you're a completionist, there's probably over 200 hours of content for you in here.

The strategy largely boils down to unit energy and health management. Units that get a kill a get an extra move, allowing them to move 3 times per turn, and when their squad leader is nearby, they can team attacking/defense. You generally move units up as a squad to allow them to chain team attacks, then return them to your ship's hanger to recharge energy or any lost health.

There's also "raid groups" which don't have a warship attached to them. To recharge HP and EN, you have them groups closer together (HP) r further apart (EN). This allows them to recharge up to 40% HP/10% EN a turn or 30% EN/0% HP a turn. So far, in my limited experience, these seem to be less efficient than squads attached to warships, since I tend to burn through FAR more than 30% EN per turn per unit.

That said, when units level up, you get to pick which stats go up. You could probably build mecha for raid groups specifically by specializing in total EN, but then you're sacrificing accuracy/evasion or damage or defense.

It's not particularly complex on the positional side of things gameplay wise. It's more of managing the tools you have (and the restrictions of those tools) to take down the enemy forces as efficiently as possible.

I think if you're into tactics games you'll likely have a good time, but I am biased, since I casually like Gundam. I actually like the games more than anything else funnily enough.

Playing a SRW or G-Gen game without knowing the series involved might sound strange, but my first venture into gundam was playing Federation vs Zeon before I saw any animated series.

Since they give you a run down of the story you'll basically be told whatever you needed to be told to understand what's going on and also since everything is fresh and new you won't have any preset biases against certain suits or shows which makes you want to give literally everything a try

Right! Thanks everyone! I think I'll try it, but after it goes on some sale sometime next year.
