On the right hand side it shows what the MS was derived from and which MS was developed from it.
Otherwise if you have knowledge of each series, you can pretty much figure out what builds into what.
next time you upgrade, press Y(xbox controller) on one(eventually all) of the units you can upgrade. you will see several blacked out units you have yet to discover, just look at the stats and go for the highest stats.
This is generally speaking of course, there are several exceptions to this rule.
Aside from dispatches, GET, rewards or capturing, you can level a MS which has reached its "maximum' upgrade, and exchange it for an inferior MS of a different series, the more leveled the better the selection for exchange. This results in an net loss of capitol though so should only be used if you have the spare cash or end up with most of your mechs on the same development "tree".
if you encountered those MS at some point somehwere, they should be visible, in the begining, it will be hard to guess those mechs, but later on, you should be able to get a good idea of what you need to build/get for your goal.... sadly, it is not the best 'design tree' that is possible, but at least, its somewhat useable
that's neat, though would have been useful to know before going the long way to unlocking it, through haro, exia.
The UC has a clear picture of this MS inspired these MS that in turn inspired this one and so on through 2 decades worth of in timeline technological advancement as covered by Genesis. The AU is much more scattershot on how one goes from a Leo to the Tallgeese and such.
I guess my overall point is that the development tree for Crossrays isn't as clear as that of Genesis just because of its setting and the sparse technology evolution info we have from them.
I was hoping for a design list because it's weird stuff like Blitz+Virgo=Hyperion that throws me off
Because the only wiki I find is totally lacking any info:

If you look at the Leo and Tallgeese the only major differences between them is the more Roman style head with crest, the shoulder guards with the shield mount, and the backpack thrusters. The entire rest of the frame is a Leo. With the shin guards being a slightly different design.
The Tallgeese even has a Leo model head under the mask/head ornament, which surprised me when I re-watched Wing recently.'
The Tallgeese is more or less the Grand Dad of all Mobile Suits in Wing's universe. They used Leo parts to help repair it for Zechs.
