The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Falion: vampire expert and stupid git
I'm having my first time as a vampire in the game, and Falion in Morthal has promised me to cure me. I was told to meet him at a sort of mini-Stonehenge at dawn, and he would perform some ritual. But when I meet him there, he just attacks me and won't talk. All I can do is kill him... but then, he just wakes up again and continues fighting with a filled health bar. I can kill him again and again, but he never learns. He may be immortal but he certainly doesn't seem very intelligent.

According to the Skyrim Wiki, that will happen if you're a Stage 4 vampire. Just feed on someone before you go to see him and he shouldn't attack. If you're not stage 4 (starving), then it's a bug of some kind.
Oic! I guess you're right. After I made the appointment with him, but before meeting him again, the screen flashed with a red tint, and there was a message about me being thirsty for blood or something. I guess that's when I passed into what you call "stage 4".

I'll still consider it a bug or glitsch that should be fixed, albeit a minor one. It doesn't make any in-game sense that he promises to cure me of vampirism, and then tries to kill me for staying my bloodthirst rather than feeding on one of his fellow villagers.

Anyway, thanks for the help, Shadow :)
At stage 4 without dawnguard dlc, everybody will attack you on sight, including your follower too. It's not a bug.
Depends on your definition of "bug", I suppose. I know a programmer who uses to say "if it compiles, it works". I think most people would have higher demands than that, but I guess that you can argue that this case should rather be called poor or sloppish game design, since the special case of Falion ought to have got some attention here. That's all a matter of words. The bottom line still is that it's no good and something should be done about it.

Anyway, here's the new chapter: I tried feeding before meeting Falion, and it didn't seem to me to work. He doesn't attack me anymore, but when the quest system closes the "Meet Falion at dawn" step and opens the next one, "Speak to Falion", I can't satisfy the requirement. I can talk to him (getting the options to 1. Ask for conjuration lessons; 2. Ask why he set up a shop here; 3. Ask what he can tell about the area), but nothing seems to advance the quest. The goal marker is still bopping over his head, though.

I guess I'll have to go back to a save before even talking to him, which is very annoying, since the most recent save before that will set me far back. That'll have to wait until next week when I have time to play again, tho'.
He must be in the stone circle otherwise the quest cannot be completed. And this a glitch this time. You can try to push him in the circle, or attack him and calm him when he is in the circle.

But for the stage 4, it's working as designed/intended.

It may well be working as designed/intended, but if Falion was intended to work in this way under these circumstances, then I still find it a poor design. If a vampire expert like Falion, while we make our appointment, really does have the odd intention to kill me unless I drink somebody's blood before our meeting, he should at least say so; and it's such a curious way of thinking that it's out of character even for Falion. I actually hope that it's an understandable little slip rather than an intention on Beth's side. If it's really intended this way, then it's a cheap and shoddy way of trapping the player in a nonsensical situation just to be "challenging" or to drag out time, and totally untypical for the otherwise high standard of the game's realism and fairness.

Thanks for the advice about having to be in the circle. :) I actually think this makes more narrative sense than Falion's odd behaviour, but there you go. It's alway interesting to hear other opinions.
Well, if you look at your journal entry before the ritual, you can read this :

Falion in Morthal can perform a ritual to cure vampirism. He requires a filled black soul gem. I should be careful not to be Blood-Starved when I meet with him or he won't trust me enough to help.

(Objective is assigned): Bring a filled Black Soul Gem to Morthal

So you have been warned. :)

To me it isn't a matter of whether I've been warned or not, just as it isn't about whether everybody else in the world behaves the same way. It's still preposterously absurd and a flaw in the game.
:( he just does not talk to me about the cure, ive goten every thing but he still wont cure me, and im not bloody thirsty :(

As somebody else has said, he has to be in the circle before the cure option appears in his conversation. If he's standing outside the circle, push him inside it. You know, Skyrimians have their space of intimacy, so they'll move if you stand very close to them. You can use that to get him to move there, in small steps.

thanks, i fixed it, he was not going to the circle at night, 3 nights at a row, he finally went when i was going to give up. Finally dragons dont kill me with fire so fast now. :) thanks tho
mountrye, it may annoy you but it does make perfect sense. He doesn't trust vampires when they are in stage 4 so he attacks, just like all the others. It is perfectly logical. Let it go! :o)

On the other hand, I had the problem of having no speech option to start the ritual too. I was so annoyed I whacked the hell out of young Falion and knocked him out. He was outside the circle the whole time, even when he "reset" after I "killed" him. But when he reset, he suddenly started the ritual. Hope that works for others - give Falion 'what for" until you knock him down, wait for him to get up and see what happens.

No, it doesn't annoy me. I originally raised the question to hear if other people found it as ridiculous as I do, and if you disagree, that's fine.

I still think it's pretty odd that Falion, Skyrim's leading expert on vampires, will make an appointment with a vampire without warning him that he'll attack if you haven't had a fill of blood before the appointment, but I think I've stated so much already.

It would appear that I'm in the minority here, so I guess I'll let it fare.
If it doesn't annoy you, you may want to rethink your use of the words "very annoying." I'm only sayin'... :o)
he knows you're a vampire, has an appointment with you in order to cure you.
"gods! a vampire! burn it!"
