I hate Serana!!!!!!
I played dawnguard on both sides (dawnguard and vampires) and in both situation i hated serana.

1: you are FORCED to have her as a follower in 90% of dawnguard quests, ad for people that like to go solo this is really a pain. Even if she has high sneak she gives up your position many times becouse she charges ito battles. Also she is VERY WEAK, making almost no dmg and being crippled very easy, either in the low levels and in the high levels.

2: she ALAWAYS COMPLAINS: if you travel in daytime she can't stand the light and asks you to go into caves, when you go into caves she says she has been buried for centuries and wants fresh air, if you travel at night she doesn't stand th weather, grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

3: DAWNGUARD SIDE PLOT HOLE AS BIG AS A PLANET: ok, i am a dawnguard, i am a werewolf, i go into the cave and i free a vampire that brings an ELDER SCROLL with her, and not only i let her go, but i help her to bring the elder scroll into my arch-enemy castle...
Well, my char would have killed her on the spot and retrieved the elder scroll, and the fact that there is no choice or any explanation is given why i should bring her to the vampire castle, makes that episode the worst written of the entire game.

Someone explain me why i should bring serana to the vampire castle and leave the elder scroll to the vapires. I mean, the elder scroll is THE MOST POWERFULL TOOL in the entire Nirn...
That completely makes no sense.

On the vampire side it makes no sense too: before becoming a vampire lord i must go to dawnguard castle, join them, and then change my mind after meeting the vampire lord. That makes no sense too, if i was inot vampirism why the hell should i go to help dawnguards?

Wouldn't it had been easier: you like vampires or are a normal vampire, hear a rumor about a vampire castle, travel there, be instructed by vampire lord to free her daughter and bring back to the castle, reward: become a vampire lord.

DAwnguard side: kill serana, retrieve the elder scroll, go back to dawnguard castle, intercept the elder scroll reader, etc.

I think that would have been more realistc and well written, and not difficult to progrm into the game.

To OP, your post is only useless whining: before posting you already knew hearthfire content.

You posted this about an hour ago on someones post... Shouldnt you stop whining then?

mine isn't whining, is a speculation about an npc and a plot that could have been written better. I enjoied dawnguard (played it with 2 chars to see both sides...)

It would have been a post to discuss game features instead of reporting CTDS, but i guess this forum become a "can't run the game, help me" forum.

Dear ygolnac.
I understand your problem with the story but you are forgeting that skyrim is a dungeon crawler.
It never was great on stories.
Too answer your problems to the best of my limeted abilities:
1:Yes escort quests sucks.
I advise downloading amazing follow mod.
It makes all my companies more likeable.
However as i play healer/mage i general like having four people beating the ♥♥♥♥ out of my enemies.
Also this more makes your companions more costumizable including a stealth made that makes them have perma-invisiblity and muffle on aslong you dont fight.

2:She complains yes.
However name one charater in skyrim that doesnt?
As far as companion goes she isnt that anoying.
Just tune her out like you would tune out an anoying little sister.
Aka ignore her.
Or make a game of it.
If she whine's about the sun pretent you tell her.
It is good for your skin.
Or if she says i have been burried for a long time i really dont want to stay in cave's simple say.
Atleast you have more moving space now.
Just make fun of her.

3:Again it is skyrim.
Skyrim is a dungeon crawler(despite the claims to a rpg)
In this case you can pretent she either enscrolled you(mind control)
Or the nine stayed your hand.
Whatever makes you accept this indeed rediculess senario.

That said i accauly quiet like serana.
She is less anoying then 95% of skyrim population.

FWIW, I really like Serana[www.uesp.net]! (I'm playing Dawnguard, not Vampire.) She's one of the best NPCs in the game!

I have to agree about it being so contrived why you helped her. I kept clicking the dialogue options hoping one of them would eventually allow me to tell her to walk her own ass down there. I installed dawnguard to kill vampires, not play bodyguard for a vampire "princess"

Just a couple of points: Vampire's have the ability to seduce. What makes you think Serana didn't seduce the player? How does a seduced pawn know s/he's been seduced, except how she interacts with said vampire? Vampire's also tend to live in seclusion, and clans of vampires rarely accept vampires of other blood within their rank, or even bother to deal with them. They are even less predisposed to dealing with vampires who have not been embraced into a clan properly and that have been created as a freak mistake.

Finding and returning Serana may have been the only way her father would have ever welcomed you into his blood, and given that the Volkihar vampire clan wouldn't have been willing to tell a freak mistake about it, the only way you could have known is from those they attacked, the Vigil of Stendarr, whose only surviving member would only report to Isran.

Yep, I like her too, however all of the OP's points are valid.

Also good points.

Glad to know I'm not the only one who didn't like Serena and found Dawnguard's plot to be silly. Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Dawnguard come out around the same time as the last Twlight movie? If so, I think this might be why Bethesda made the first DLC about vampires.

Aside from the plot, I find Serana's company a little wearing too, I have to admit. She's just a bit miserable really isn't she? lol. When we did that quest to find her mother though she wasn't bad as a follower. She reanimated dead corpses to fight for her all the time - I didn't know she had this ability so initially I was also fighting her dead corpse pals, thinking they were the enemy too!. Then I realized what was going on. Anyway I've just got to the point where I returned the Blood Elder Scroll to that guy in Dawnguard (who is now blind) and who should be hanging about there like a bad smell but Serana, who had already made herself my follower for the next Dawnguard quest despite the fact I'd brought one of my own choice along. My heart sank a bit I have to say, so I saved and quit the game cos I know it's going to be a long one with her around!

Although I sometimes find her limited dialogue gets a bit tedious, I like her. (That's not her fault!) Again in her defence, as Jojo mentioned, Serana's necromancy out in Skyrim is always helpful to me, although occasionally confusing. (In draugr tombs she conjures a draugr to fight other draugrs; conjures bandits in bandit hideouts, and such. Most recently, she's conjured a wolf to fight a wolf pack we encountered on a walk through Skyrim. The wolf was new.) She's fighting, I'm fighting, and whatever she conjured up is fighting, all of us on the same side. I guess one reason I like her is that my laptop isn't customised for gaming (customised with other applications in mind), so its relatively low frame-rate makes fighting difficult for me in some situations. Serana has made the game playable for me. I can't do without her.

I had fun watching Tobuscus playing Dawnguard. I thought the plot was at least unexpected. I'll give them that. I'm a little concerned about Serana being weak though. I wanted to have a mage companion for one of my characters, but now I'm thinking I should check out mods to find a more buff mage follower. Any suggestions?

and rabbits, deer, bears, foxes and spiders to date. She is also essential, which is a nice to have. The best i have managed with her was; and her and her conjured critter, my conjured critter - which was a high end drauger - and its storm atronach. That was fun, if very confusing.

1. Yes, having a forced follower is annoying. But most annoyance is coming from the stupid follower AI and trust me, Serana is not the worst.
2. Hmm, did not notice the "always complain" part. She rarely speaks and most of her comments are appropriate. Maybe a glitch? And her spells are quite powerful.
3.Yes, that "vampire hunter peacefully chatting with vampire" is strange.
The only explanation I was able to come up with:
She subtly used her vampire powers, making DB a little bit more curios and a little less aggressive and much more arrogant. “Friendly vampire with Elder Scroll, can kill her anytime, and with little patience she will lead me to the vampire nest. With luck will be able to deal with the problem then, permanently.”
As for the leaving the Catle Volkihar without a fight... Maybe DB did understand that he/she was over his/her head? “Oh, 7 vampires (not counting Serana), I am alone, they are all around me, I have no idea what are they capable of, what defenses they have, what magic they can use and how many of them I do not see. Great.” And Harkon did teleport you out of the castle before you decided what to do.
