Creation Kit and the 1.8 Skyrim patch
Recently Skyrim has been updated to version 1.8(.145.0.7). However, the Creation Kit has not been updated an I now have a problem working on plugins that require the files Update.esm, Dawnguard.esm and Hearthfires.esm. My CK is version 1.6.89.0. The messages I receive are: "MASTERFILE: File Update.esm is a higher version than this EXE can load" and "Unable to find masterfile: Update.esm". To be clear on that last message: Update.esm is still in the right spot (otherwise the game would not show version 1.8)!!

Does anyone have an idea? Up till now I haven't found any comments on the net.

I'm having the same problem has you; and there aren't so far anyother comments on the web.
For this is a real big problem because i like modding a lot and like you i can't load the creation kit. I guess from now on i will only update skyrim when there will be also the same update for the creation kit; so think the only think we can do for know is just wait for the update or for someone to come with a solution for this problem. It seems i will be playing skyrim a lot more in the next few days or weeks.

The only thing I have found sofar is a warning not to update to the 1.8 patch, meaning that you should have stayed ofline. However, you can still use the CK, but you should only activate Skyrim.esm and not the other .esm files. I'm working on a new mod, and now only working out the parts that only need Skyrim.esm. You can use the CK, but only with Skyrim.esm loaded!! Since this problem occurred, I have played the game again far more than I used to lately. Used the console command "tmm 1,0,0" to see if I missed some caves, etc. And yes, there were some loose ends. But, now it's time for a final 1.8 patch and an update for the CK! Or a new DLC?

Patch 1.8 is still in beta, you had to opt in. The CK will need to be updated before any mods requiring the updated files will be possible. Once 1.8 goes live, it shouldn't be terribly long before a CK update follows.

One somewhat shoddy workaround could be to (if you have the relevant options enabled) make a copy of your 1.8 Update.esm, restore a backup of Update.esm from a Windows Restore Point or something. Do your work in the Creation Kit, and then replace the updated esm file. That shouldn't have any negative effects in terms of game stability (it hasn't for me so far) - it's essentially just as if you did the modding before the update, isn't it?

Meh, I just opted out of beta for now and went back to the 1.7 till they get this all sorted out. ^_^
Now I can mod again. Yay!

Sorry, I just have to wait for the final 1.8 patch and the CK update! For what I've heard (read) it probably would not take too long. In the mean time I have some other work to do, which only requires Skyrim.esm! So, I can silently prepare for the final and the update, and then maybe burst some new stuff.

Does anyone know when the CK patch will be out?

How do you opt out of the beta? Is there a pop-up when you start up skyrim that allows you to choose to opt out or something? I'm not fully finished with the download and I want to be prepared.

The SKSE it's also outdated, I can't play or work with my mod in the CK :(.
I hope that the update will be soon.

Same problem here : I get the pop-up message "Unable to find masterfile: Update.esm" with every modification based on "update.esm" masterfile; next an unavoidable crash of the tool. It's not a simple issue : THAT'S A DISASTER !!! I have been working on a mod for weeks and suddendly BANG !! I find myself like an i**** with no way to go on. I really hope for a quick solution !!!

@Karlos
SKSE has already been updated to the 1.8 patch. I had the same error when trying to start the game a few hours ago saying it's out of date so I googled it and went to the silverlock page and sure enough there is an update.

Argh! Trying to put out an update to my Dragon Lord Castle Mod and I go to log in yesterday to be greated with the same error! Steam forced me to take the 1.8 update and now CK is busted . Any updates on creation kit update ?
Altbert 2 listopada 2012 o 16:11
The 1.8 update is now 1.8.151.0.7 instead of 1.8.145.0.7, but it's still some kind of beta, I think, since the CK has not been updated. There's some progress, but we still have to wait! Pity and annoying!

When i try to get skyrim & dawnguard (seperate or together) up and running on the creation kit it stops working (it say "Creation Kit is not responding")

Annoying. Why take the patch out of beta when it was going to screw up the CK? I would have never updated (not that I have much of a choice the way steam looks for every opportunity to sign in and update) and there is no way of going back now. This better not take months for this problem to be solved.
