Followers bugged- can't invite anyone, get "you've already got someone" dialog
Is there a console command to wipe your active followers, so that I can invite again? I've checked the posts and couldn't find an answer here, so any help is appreciated and sorry if it has been posted before. Thanks! TJNEURON

answered my own question, here's what I found:
console command to reset followers = "set playerfollowercount to <0>" which wipes the follower list and allows you to invite again.

First of all you should make sure you don't have a follower that is needed to complete a quest. Look through your quest log. Companions quests especially have this glitch. Dismissing them with a console command might bug the quest permanently.

Here are two commands

show playerfollowercount (This one will tell you if you have one active).

set playerfollowercount to <0 or 1> ( this one will reset it to zero if you enter 0 )

Thus set playerfollowercount to 0

EDIT: I guess I'm too slow.

thanks bobczes, that was useful information; i've yet to determine whether or not my first companion quest is permanently fracked now, i got sidetracked on another quest. if i do find that my companion quest is bugged, can i reset that quest using a specific console command? do you know what it might be or a resource which i might use? thank you so much, you're not too slow, i am just too comfortable asking for help! thanks for the feedback! cheers, tjneuron.

update on the companions quest: i cleared my followers, picked up khajeet mage at the winterhold college, met the companion dude at the quest site, and it turns out i went through the quest with 2 followers. not sure if this is normal, since its the first time i've done this quest. any input? cheers.

Followers can be divided into those who follow you indefinitely (until they die or are dismissed), and those who follow you temporarily (for example, during a quest).

Some NPCs follow you temporarily for the duration of a quest. If you avoid completing the quest and go somewhere else, they may follow you around. As many of these NPCs are unkillable, and you can have several followers at the same time, you can use them to fight difficult enemies in a different questline.

You don't need to.

Keep a notebook. Write down who is in your party. Then if you take a game break and come back you can always remember who it was..or restart the game.
