It could be a fines enforcment restriction. No gameplay till you've paid up LOL. Sorry sounded funnier in my head than it actually was due to my previous job.
right click the skyrim game in your library and click properties and go to local files then click on verify integrity of game cache. this fixed a lot of my problems after lots of play so i hope it helps!
I've had some bounties on my head, but nothing like that.
But seriously, the only a couple of things I can suggest and one I'm sure you won't like.
1. Reload a previous save before the bounty got out of hand.
2. Start a new game under a new character and see if the problem persists ... just do something to get arrested and see whether or not the game still crashes. You don't have to keep the character after you confirm the problem and can delete those saves related to the new character.
But if the crash doesn't happen with a new character, I suspect it's some bug related to that high bounty on the original character. In that case, I'd reload a prior save (that most likely means losing a few levels). Then go back into the town to see if the problem has cleared.
Barring that, should all else fail .... I'd start a new game and try to be more careful about hacking and slashing.
**something else just occured to me. Check to make sure the bounty on your head matches the bounty you have to pay. If they don't match, that could cause a crash. **
Incorrect. Console cheats would fix the lack of cash. You could also quickly create a follower in the creation kit and include a huge amt of gold in the followers inventory.
BTW.... did you realise the date of the post you replied to?

create a text file in your data folder and call it bounty then add these codes to it.Then in game type bat bounty in the console it will remove all bounty's without the crash.enjoy;)
I'm necro'ing this thread because this problem can still happen (mistakenly hit friendly NPC during dragon battle or something similar) and the top Google Search result for "skyrim crashes when I go to jail" doesn't work for me. This is the #2 result and what Strange parrot mentioned works like a charm.
I always steal a lot when I play, and I mean a lot. Like, I spend 60% of my time playing just stealing stuff. Now, I assume that its a specific item that causes this problem, but with the load of stolen goods I have, which I also partly use as equipment, I really dont want to force 100 crashes until I find out.
Maybe someone who has that problem can test this and guess which item he recently stole that might cause this problem?
Goes into the console, worked for me. It will pay the bounty immediately, so you need the amount of gold.
