What happens if you leave the soul cairn without your soul essence?

Because i don't seem to find that ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ stone and i want to leave...what happens? the debuff gets removed?

From my experience, yes the debuff is still removed.

The debuff will persist in the Soul Cairn only. Once you leave, it will be fine in regular Skyrim. However, if you re-enter the Soul Cairn, the debuff will be put back on. Also, from a roleplay standpoint, you'll have a piece of your soul missing. Personally, I found that a bit creepy and disturbing, so I found it and got it back.
