Storing the Elder Scrolls?
I just finished the Dawnguard quests (initial ones, anyway — don't know how many there are) and I still am carrying around 60 weight units of the 3 Elder Scrolls. They've all been read, deciphered, and everything at this point. I can't drop or store them, so there must be some point with respect to the game in still having to hang on to them. Carrying them is putting limits on my ability to carry weapons, loot, and other stuff. (My weight limit is 360 right now. I've been playing Skyrim for about 6 weeks, so I'm still fairly new.)

When can I store the 3 Elder Scrolls someplace safe (in Breezehome or somewhere else) so I don't have to carry them around any more? There are a few other quest items I'd eventually like to store, but they're weapons, and so are at least useful. Can't say the same for the Scrolls.

Thanks!

You can sell two of them to Dexion Evicus (the Moth Priest) once the Dawnguard main questline is over (at least if you chose the Dawnguard side, I don't know about the vampire side). The original Elder Scroll you can sell to the Orc in the Arcaeneum at the College of Winterhold IF you've finished the regular Skyrim main questline. Otherwise there are console commands that can help you drop them and I'm sure there's a mod or two out there.

[KL*KNoSC] DerAlleinTiger — Thank you again! I'll try to find Dexion Evicus first. I've completed the Dawnguard main quest as a Dawnguard, and was quite happy that Serana decided to join the Dawnguard as well. It's easy to find the Arcaeneum since I'm also the Archmage of the College. It's not like the Scrolls have any information I can actually read and make sense of, so they're dead weight now.

I read the Elder Scroll - Dragon at the correct location but haven't yet been able to defeat Alduin. Several deaths later (and at higher levels, something I'm used to by now) I managed to fast-travel away with the Dragonrend shout and the Scroll before Alduin killed me again. (Now I have Serana and the dragon I befriended in that quest to help me defeat Alduin. I still haven't figured out how to do that on my own.) Do I have to have that Scroll with me in order to defeat Alduin (that I intend to keep working at until I do)?

I'm still enough of a noob to not want to complicate things with mods yet. When I get more comfortable with the infrastructure of the game I'll add mods.

Being only a light modder myself, I can understand that.

And yes, you do need that scroll for the first fight. What I'm not sure of is whether or not you have to keep it all the way until the end of the main questline or if you can just sell it after that battle on the mountain (yes, the questline keeps going after that).

You're just lucky you're the Archmage. My main character is a warrior who hardly uses a healing spell, let alone the rest of the magic spells. So I really didn't feel like joining the College just to get rid of the damn Scroll. Thankfully, console commands helped me out there.

I'll keep the Dragon scroll until I defeat Alduin, just to be safe. I'll get rid of the other two by selling them to the Moth Priest.

Doing the College quests seemed like an interesting way to get started with spells, since unlike 'real world' weapons, they're not intuitive. I still have much to learn. I chose Redguard because of their reputation in combat (and knowing nothing about Skyrim in the beginning, that seemed a safe choice). I use bows and broadswords (and Sneak) for almost everything, and Shouts (I particularly like Ice Form, followed by a broadsword attack) when appropriate. I carry staffs for sparks, flames, and ice spikes (that I looted rather than enchanted myself — I'm nowhere near that proficient), one reason I want to get rid of the scrolls. Serana has such an awesome command of magic that I can generally get by with the basics. I'm working on getting my magic skills up closer to the level of my Archery and Two-Handed skills, just so I have them if my more basic weapons don't solve a particular problem. I carry some healing potions, and my luckiest find was the Amulet of Immunity that makes me 100% immune to all diseases, including vampirism. The Clairvoiance spell (from the spell tome) was the only way I was able to get Auriel's bow. I haven't needed it in dungeons and mazes before, but even with the Game Guide and UESP, I couldn't figure out how to get out of that place!

the scrolls don't have weight to them, put everything you have in your inventory in a safe container and see for yourself when you are nake

Lies.

Get one of the mods to make the scrolls droppable, then keep them in a house. Display them or keep them under lock and key.

The dragon scroll can be sold to the archivist at the College as soon as you complete the Alduin's Bane quest. You can do this before it is needed in Dawnguard if you wish and you can buy it back from him when it is needed, however you can't resell it to him so you will be left with it stuck in your inventory.

As has been said, you can sell the other two to Daxion once the Unseen Visions quest is completed if you are on the Dawnguard side. If you are on the Vampire side there is no way of getting rid of them in the base game.

Trigger is correct, quest items don't count towards your max weight, you can carry them indefinately, though if you're like me and like not having extra crap in your inventory i suggest eitherselling them or getting a mod that makes them droppable so you can store/display them in a player house.

Modi & Trigger — I stand corrected. They're listed as each weighing 20, but when I sold them off, my 'items' weight was unchanged. They're weightless, as you said.

FOLLOWING UP — I sold two of the scrolls to the Moth Priest for 6000 gold. I later went to the College to deliver another book, and part of the dialogue allowed me to sell the Dragon scroll for 2000 gold. I wasn't expecting that. So it's not necessary to have the Dragon scroll to continue the battle with Alduin (I still haven't defeated him), but it is necessary to have it to learn the 'Dragonrend' shout and begin the battle.

I can do more with the 8000 gold than with the Elderscrolls, and now they're not cluttering my 'MISC' items list.

lol I'm with you on that. I'm really obsessed with having a clean inventory. Thankfully, the PC version has console commands and mods that can help. But on the Xbox 360 version... I'm still stuck with the three bugged instruments from the Bards College questline. It angers me greatly.

And there is always the problem that reading them risks going blind in the process. There are already enough dangers about living in Skyrim without that!
