my advice, you will get used to it so dont bother thinking about it to much. there are no minimap mods out there or anything that improves the navigation so i doubt anyone can help you.
Well, the compass itself is better than some minimaps I've seen. Hell, it even has an icon that hovers over doors and NPC's when you need to go through them/interact with them. That's even more hand-holdy than Fallout's.

Upon pressing TAB button, you can and must use the ''south'' compass point that is 'MAP', which will bring up a real-time status on your bearings/position within Skyrim, and also will display tactical data featuring locations, quest markers and also a pictoral composition of your general topography...seriously dude...you don't need to worry about getting lost as long as you get to know your HUD and menu interfaces...
Yes I have been on the plonk tonight, but I don't care... :D
