How do I get to Morthal?
I know I can just walk to Morthal, or take a cart. But if I wanted to get there in an in-character way -- my character doesn't know about it, so he can't go there until someone directs him there. No one has, yet. I'm looking for a quest that sends him there. Where can I find one?

I'm level 43-something already, if that helps. Does Morthal come in later?

Go to solitude and then swim across the river into the swamp and if you keep going strait you will get there

Other quests don't particullary "lead" you there.

Follow the road south and then take the turnoff to the left after crossing the bridge.

The only thing I can think of is becoming a vampire and asking an inn keeper about a way to cure your vampirism. They'll then direct you to someone in Morthal.

Otherwise, Morthal isn't really that important in the grand scheme of Skyrim. Even the townspeople say so and want it to stay that way.

You do have a map, maybe want to see the inn?

that would be funny -- my character is already a werewolf ... so a combination vampire-werewolf ... that's a good one :)

and yeah I know I could just walk there, but that crosses the line between player knowledge and character knowledge. So.

Why wouldn't your character know about it? It's one of the "major" towns in Skyrim, capital of its own hold, with a Jarl. It's like someone in the US never hearing of Denver, a smallish city in a sparsely populated state, but that would be highly, highly unusual. Now your character for RP purposes may have no reason to visit, but that's another story entirely, the fact is that he has to have heard of it unless he's some uneducated outlander (A term not used in Skyrim).

RP that it's been marked on your map for some reason (a convo with some pleb about vampires or whatever), and being a hardy adventuring type, you can read maps and would want to investigate such disturbing revelations.

Good call.

Unless your character hasn't finished Bleak Falls Barrow and returned to Farangar with the Dragonstone, or ever visited a war room in any hold, there is no excuse to pretend he or shee hasn't seen the big flagged map with all the major holds marked, in addition to many smaller communities and forts.

It's called exploring. Eventually you will find Morthal.

good calls, all of you, but esepcially this one. I have the museum in Dawnstar quest, but didn't know it led to Morthal, not having followed it yet. Thanks!

Morthal is very near Labyrinthian, and on the east/west road between Dawnstar/Windhelm and Markath/Solitude.
