Guards for my Heathfire House?
Hi,

I was wondering why I can't hire guards to guard Lakeview Manor. I mean, it gets attacked a lot by bandits and it is practically undefended when I'm away (which is most of the time) because no one is patrolling outside. This really bugs me.

Becoming a thane of Falkreath grants you a new housecarl Rayya. She will patrol the manor and it's grounds. Also, keeping a battleready steward in the manor - like Lydia, if you don't travel with her - is also advisable.

Edit: In addition to that, you can't hire any guards for your manos, but hose two + you are quite enough to deal with bandits.

There is a mod that fixes that:

Guards on Your home -hearthfire- Updated[skyrim.nexusmods.com]

Or Pocket Empire Builder and/or Real Time Settle for Skyrim. Both allow you to build a town/fort around your house and get guards and other sorts of townspeople.
