'Learn Soultear' shout, but...
In my quest log there's a quest that says 'Learn the Soul Tear shout', but I can't learn this shout because I don't have it, it's not on my Shouts list.

I recently reinstalled Windows and the Steam Client, and when I launched the game I found I'd been set back to a much earlier save. For instance, I hadn't done any of the quests on the island where Raven Rock, the Skaal, Apochrypha etc. are located, I also found I hadn't completed all the Dawnguard quests yet.

So I wonder if this Soul Tear shout could be from something I did before I reinstalled so that now I haven't done it even though the quest is still in my log?

Any other ideas about how this can be?

You have Dawnguard too? Because to my knowledge "Soul tear" is a Dawnguard shout which you can unlock by using the "Call Durnehviir" shout 3 times. Every time you use it, Durnehviir teaches you a new word of the "Soul tear" shout.

Ah, this may be the reason, then. Yes, I have Dawnguard, but I never was able to call Durnehviir. Glitch of some sort.

Wait? What do you mean? I've tried doing this as soon as I got it in the quest log and I've tried waiting until as soon as I was back in Tanriel and until I'd been back in Tamriel for a while, but none of it mattered.

To call Durnehviir you have to look at the floor when you shout, and make sure you do it on big free area.

I meant the second I got the shout, I unlocked all the words in the shout. Then the objectives started to appear but never dissapeared from my quest journal.

Yeah, I looked up a lot of info on this quest and the problems that sometimes come with it and I remember reading this - and trying it, sevelral times too. :)

Okay. Well yes, that's how it is for me too.

Its a bug in the game. Sometimes if you unlock all three and use the shout it will go away,sometimes....not.
I can't unlock anything, I don't have the Shout.
But before I reinstalled I did get the Shout while in the Soul Cairn, and exactly as you say, I tried both unlocking the first word (as it says to do in the quest) and then to unlock all three, but none of it worked. I tried more things but eventually couldn't think of more to try. There were also a lot of other people having the same issue at the time, I don't think any of us solved the issue.

The shout you get in the soul carin isnt the soultear shout. Thats the shout used to summon the dragon you fight there to skyrim (durenhviir). He wants to fly around in the surface world and he offers you teach you the soul tear shout in exchange for summoning him. You have to go back to skyrim and summon him three times, each time to do he will teach you a single word of the shout. The quest only goes away once you learn all three words from him. to summon Durenhhviir you have to be outside in skyrim (not the carin) and you'll need a large area without any objects in the way.
Ah yes, I remember it now. I couldn't summon Durnehviir no matter how many times I tried. And yes, I did go back to Skyrim and tried to summon him outdoors. - But I could try again, since other bugs are fixed now maybe this one is too.

Thanks for reminding me. :)
