I was on my way to High Hrothgar, when I came across this thin fellow named Balbus, not far from Whiterun. Well, I told him I didn't hear of The Gourmet, and the jerk insulted me. Being the hotheaded 2h warrior Nord that I am, I threw a FUS at him, and intended to move on... but Lydia, who is even more hothead than I am, whipped out her sword and made short work of him. I'm just hoping I won't need Balbus for anything when it comes time to do that Gourmet quest or whatever. Lydia... got to love her.

No, I don't think he's tied to any quests, at least not in an important way. If he was, then he'd likely be unkillable.

unless you have a mod that makes quest NPC killable or a mod interfaring with another mod wich makes everyone killable or something....

I didn't install anything that is supposed to do that, but I can't say for sure that some of my few mods might conflict unintentionally. I'll have to test it out next time.
