Give him/her a sword that is stronger than his/her bow.

download Amazing Follower Tweaks, and you can set exactly how your follower(s) fight in combat, you can have 5 instead of 1 with AFT. and you choose what they level up in. magic, dual handed etc.

I've used UFO (Ultimate Follower Overhaul)* for so long but I may have to try this out. I'm curious though how is follower commands in terms of frustration. I told Faendal to wait (FAR) from combat even made him sit on a perch I thought was safe. I went off got six wolves and once they were dead I began skinning via hunterborn. Suddenly a courier approached (Do they hide a tracking beacon in my body!?) and told me about an inheritence. I literally facepalmed because I -knew- Faendal was dead without even opening the letter. Sure enough despite being told to stay he had I gues gotten bored? He wandered off and was killed by one of the wolves.

I'm confused, if you take their bow and arrows from them, how could they possibly keep using a bow? I mean, they might pick up another one as soon as they can but you could just take that one away too, if you really wanted to make sure they relied upon melee only.

Another option would be to take a follower who wants to use melee weapons anyway. Lydia seems to be an obvious choice for that.

Those are a couple of non-mod solutions to consider.

you can set your followers to unkillable on AFT. they can also be set to ignore your or other followers accidental hits on them so they never attack you. so yeah, invincible and never attack you. AFT is awesome. and there is so much more you can do with it. hard to explain.

Every follower as an infinite supply of arrows and bows. Its coded by bethesda. You can pickpocket the bow from them but it will respawn.

download amazing follower tweaks and UFO - ive a guide on the whole thing in detail if you wana read that. But basically you can either do that as it will force the character to change there fighting style OR you can just give them a stronger weapon and they should use that instead

I'm not sure I've ever seen them use a sword for that matter;

the one at Azura's shrine is one of the mage types; don't recall her name

or someone from the mages' college; I.ve traveled with the Khajit

with AFT my mage carries an elven sword, but never uses it, but then again ive outfitted her fully in jewelerry and clothing to reduce the cost of conjuration and destruction, and i dont particularly want a flimsy mage running and stabbing them when she could easily spam fireballs and frost atronauchs.

the warrior in the dwarven armor is the same, since i set her to two handed ive never seen her use anything else, as they dont even have the option to equip anything thats not in their "outfit" regardless of what is in their backpack.
