Problem With Delvin and Vex Resetting After Completing 3 "Extra Work" Missions
(7/8/13, 11PM EST)

I'm currently running the latest version of Skyrim for PC, with several mods, most of which are graphical changes and general bug fixes, and very few change anything major within the game. I have been having a problem with Delvin and Vex's odd jobs quests. Every time I complete the third one for either of them, their dialogue resets as though I have never completed any. For instance, I will have just returned from a job Delvin assigned me, and once he congratulates me and gives me my reward, the only start option is "I hear you have extra work." This leads him to explain all the possible jobs again, and resets my number of completed jobs in each city to zero, effectively terminating any possibility of me being able to even access the special jobs and make progress on rebuilding the Guild.

Is anyone else having this problem as well, or does anyone have a fix for this? Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

in total you have to do 45 jobs for vex and delvin before you become guild master, plus 4 or 5 special jobs. it's a very long questline.

I'm well aware of this, but their dialogue resets upon completion of every 3 quests. They act as though I haven't spoken to them before or completed any jobs before.

that's the way it goes

I have this problem as well, I have completed 4 of the special jobs but when I complete a new round of jobs for both Vex and Delvin the quests options for the special quests reset similar to the OP. Delvin specifically, he shows all the last 4 special jobs ( they are in different cities) in the dialogue that corresponds with me turning them all 4 back in again, he does this over and over in and repeat. Again, doing multiple quests for Vex and Delvin and the same thing happens. Id have to say I know I have completed at least one hundred quests for the Thieves Guild. The issue is not the number of quests, Delvin just never unlocks the next quest to finish. I have given up in frustration and it wasnt fun spending too many days trying.

The best solution for me was to forget about it, a few parts of the game are just broken unfortunately.

The quests are very repetitious and get very boring acquiring the same things. I think they must sell the loot and then get you to steal it back again. I gave them away for quite a while and then went back and became Guild Master. They still expected you to carry on as normal even when becoming boss. The only real benefit is the extra money you get for selling your loot at different cities.

I started a new game and I decided to steal the skeleton key and leave them to what ever happens.

I do have the problem of the dialogue re-setting but my jobs do not go away. What I do is save before requesting a job. Then I do not accept the job (I re-load) until they hit upon the city I am working on. I pick 5 jobs for one city--all in a row--one each from Delvin and Vex. This way you are turning in 2 jobs from one city in one visit to the Guild. Three trips and you are done. Then Del gives you the special job. I have never had a problem doing it this way.

I also pick jobs that help each other. For example, I pick a sweep job from Vex and a a bedlam job from Del. The Sweep Job completes the Bedlam job and I am done in one go. Another good strategy is to pick up a Bedlam Job from Del and retrieve one of the Stones of Barenziah from a city. Instant 500 septim job.

Try this and let me know if it works. I think the trick is to work them as quickly as possible--and finish the main quest before you start in on the City Quests. Also--do not join the Dark Brotherhood until you have finished the Thieves Guild quests because there is a bug which causes them to conflict. The Solitude job will not come up at all if you have killed Vittoria Vici at her wedding reception first.

FYI, I have about 12 mods going and they do not seem to cause any problems. The dialogue has always re-set for me from the very beginning back in 2011 when it first came out.

Update: I fixed the bug by resetting both Delvin and Vex's AI. It seemed that there was just a minor glitch (possibly caused by mods, possibly not) that caused them to fritz every time I completed job number 3 for each of them.

I really don't mind running the little jobs on the side, they're kind of fun to me even after a very large amount of gameplay. I'm glad they're fixed now. Thanks to everyone who offered help and suggestions!
