Detect Glitch
For some reason, both Detect Life and Detect Dead have stopped working on my current character.

Symptom: the spell will cast, but the affected NPC's don't light up (living don't light up for detect life; bodies/undead don't light up for detect dead.)

My next step: console remove spell command, and then buy back from vendor. I doubt it will work.

Any other ideas?

I have the same problem. I have no idea what is causing it. I've noticed that earlier save files are unaffected.

so i decided to test this out and it works on my character, who is a level 5 high elf. Now me not being an experton glitches maybe mods are disrupting this or your graphics card or settings.

Maybe reinstalling skyrim, extracting skyrim from steam putting it somewhere else but the steam folder then putting it back in steam apps then installing it again, may fix it

Of course it think its a mod as there have been no skyrim updates as of late and if there have then i haven't noticed. Then again i cant explain trebleclef's point where it works with older saves i will test it on a new level 1 and be back with the results.

After lots of exiting, altering mod settings, and reloading I discovered that the "scaled magic mod" causes this problem. Dug a little deeper and found that this causes problems with telekinesis as well. The developer of the mod is working on a fix but for now I would just unsubscribe or delete the mod.
