ah okay we're talking about a modded Skyrim, where you have killable children with weapons follow you - but that wouldn't qualify for the question:
unless you set all children/followers to be "essential"

I just got done sauteeing his thighs with a nice bottle of Cote du Rhone, seasoning and serverd up with sweet potatoes and Garlic...and I can tell you...I cooked him rare too.. ^,..,^

That's why, for instance, the European version of Fallout 2 made the children invisible. They were still in the GAME, you just couldn't see them (and they could still pickpocket you...).
Well on my game i can /fun
One thing that would help is to make children less bitter. Often enough they are horrible little characters, lines like "another adventurer here to lick my fathers boots, good job!" do not help it.
Would make sense more if they were invincible but innocent little beings that run far away from every fight and from strangers.
