Riding dragons sucks.
Yeah. It sucks. You can't even steer. The dragon just circles around and you "may choose your destination." You can't fight. You can only order your dragon to do so. ♥♥♥♥ YOU BETHESDA, I loved the rest of Dragonborn DLC but WELL ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ DONE on the dragon riding. For those of you who haven't played Dragonborn and wonders if it's worth buying, the answer is yes. But don't get your hopes up regarding the dragon riding like I did.

Given that there is already a mod out that lets you fly dragons without the need for Dragonborn (its on the workshop look it up you lazy gits ;p ) though admittedly it is only for transport not really combat and somewhat buggy atm, it still does exist. So things can only get better with the addition of the Dragonborn dlc framework and I will remain interested where the mod community goes with this in the coming days/weeks/months.
Agreed.

Speaking of Dragon Riding, when I arrive at the place to Bend the Will of the dragon that is to take me to Miraak, I use the shout...he lands as if to allow me to ride to Miraak's location, I seem to get on his back, BUT he takes off, and I'm left "sitting" in mid-air (as if actually on his back). Can't get to Miraak like that! Anyone else find this problem? Any advice on how to fix it? Thanks!

Proper dragon riding would require coding, animating and some wing remodelling, and we all know Bethesda went like "nah, let the modders do it" when they figured that out.

There was a dragon riding mod for Oblivion, I would be surprised if there wasnt already a dragon riding mod in the works for Skyrim (A game about dragons).

There is, only it is not based on the Dragonborn.esp. It does not work correctly.

I use it for fast traveling only as it seems as the most lorefriendly way of fast-traveling. But then I use a mod that allows real-time flying. So you can actually fly straight forward instead of in circles.
What pisses me off is that they gave us horse-mounted combat with weapons but they didn't include the ability to use spells on horseback, and now they've given us dragons but all we can do is shoot spells (with terrible aim) and give the dragon vague directions and commands while it flies around in circles. I know physical combat on the back of a dragon would be impossible unless you fought with bow and arrows, but come on.

I'm just still really damn bitter about my mage character having to dismount in order to fight all th damn time.

I use my Bend Will, get on dragon on Solstheim, if you stay there it does just circle. But if I go back to Skyrim it flies all over. Then you just follow instructions; press space to target, switch between 1 & 2 to change targets. It's the lazy way to kill, but is fun! It even attacks other dragons. No mod! Update: I think if you fast travel to anywhere, while on dragon, it then circles in that locale, even on Solstheim.

Still reading through replies, but perhaps it has something to do with the ground (or certain ground features) not being viewable at any and all angles (particularly the ones you would see while in free flight)?

It was the reason why Vanilla WoW didn't have flying even after the Burning Crusade expansion hit, why the Blood Elf and Draenei starter areas are still no-fly zones, and why the Cataclysm "expansion" exists at all (they had to mess with the Old World to include flying in it, so they figured they might as well totally retool it, and make a half-assed expansion out of it.)

That being said, I do have Dragonborn, and was looking forward to WoW-style free flight. Oh well, my fault for assuming. I'm sure the rest of it is worth it.

gaqo: As I mentioned in a post the other day, can you suggest how, if the dragon does not travel and take me to where Miraak is, how to get to Miraak?

I am too.....but no bugger on here seems to be bothered in trying to help you [or me, by proxy, out].
Might be worth starting a new thread?

Looks like we're on our own ... BUT that seems to be the name of the game in dealing with Steam anyway. Kind of like FedEx and United Parcel Service (UPS). Once they have your money they realy don't care if you're having problems ... 'cause they already have YOUR MONEY!
