Quill of Gemination Problem/Bug

So, I killed Vald a while back and finally decided to some of my misc quests, I went in Lake Honrich, found the Quill of Gemination. It then told me to go back to Maven and give it to her...Except, there is no dialogue option to complete the quest. I read on a few different places that you can still complete this even if Vald is dead, I also read that the Unofficial Skyrim Patch fixes it. Well, it doesn't on mine. I have the USKP and Unofficial Dawnguard patch. I also still have the quill in my inventory, I checked before I saved and exited.

NVM I wasn't aware they just appeared in your house, I thought they would come talk to me like Lydia did. --->Thane issue - I became Thane of Solitude, I also bought Proudspire and upgraded it. I however, did not get a Housecarl. As far as I was aware, you get a Housecarl for every place you become Thane. Is there a way to fix this, or does there happen to be no Housecarl for you in Solitude?

Also, I did run a google search and looked at about 5-8 different sites and pages to try and find the answer, none were found.

I thought to become thane of Riften you have to disrupt the skooma dealer operations. Not sure if there is a requirement for helping the citizens, but I normally do these ones find grimserver blade for mjol so she will be my follower, collect 10 fire salts for the blacksmith, collect the ingredients for Mrs. Blackbriar, collects materials for the jewelry merchant and deliver the ore mold from shors stone..there are tons of misc quests in Riften to keep track of.

I became Thane of Solitude, not Riften.. O_o
Your post didn't really help or pertain to anything I mentioned and described in my initial post.

Also if you killed vlad then there is no point in retrieving the quill, I would think that would cancel that quest.

I had forgotten it was tied to him, but it was still stitting in my Misc section so I went and did it. I have the quill and no way of getting rid of it or the quest.

I am having this exact problem with Maven. This is my second play-through and I didn't have the problem the first time around (Lalia was still Jarl in that game). I'm a completionist and this is bugging (no pun intended) the crap out of me. Anybody found a solution? I tried loading a save from before I picked up the quill and went through it again and still no dice.

I still haven't figured out a solution and it would seem my topic has been abandoned. I still can't find anything online, it bugs me too having it sit in my quest list.

You could just find out the quest ID and use the console to advance the last part of the quest if there seems to be no solution.

I would save that as an absolute last ditch effort though.

i have this same problem, theres no dialog for her to take the quill. she just sits there being a pompous ass

After some trial and error, I found a makeshift solution. It's not the one I would have wanted, (still no dialogue from Maven) but it gets the job done. Here's what I posted to the uesp page:

I had the exact same problem. My first play of the game worked fine. Two things changed in the second: Maven was the Jarl instead of Lalia, and Vald had been killed by one of the ******* random vampire attacks without me realizing it. I'm guessing the latter was the reason that Maven wouldn't give me the dialogue (which was the first time I was mad at her for NOT opening her mouth...) This problem was not fixed by console resurrecting Vald. I haven't been able to force the dialogue from Maven, BUT after talking to Maven with the quill, and then talking to (the newly resurrected) Vald, I did have the option to tell him that his debt had been forgiven - which was surprising since my journal was still telling me to report back to Maven. So I just used to the console to get rid of that nuisance journal entry (SetStage FreeFormValdDebt 200) and again to get rid of the nuisance quill (player.removeitem 000C04BB 1)

Thanks. I was hoping to find a solution that didn't involve using the console to edit the quest, but this will have to do.

I'm having this same problem. I have the Unofficial Skyrim Patch without any DLC. Maven won't accept my Quill.

When you killed vald, you killed the quest for the quill. you were to get the quill for maven, then go tell vald his debt was cleared and he would given you the to mercers house-no need to kill him then.

I killed Vald found the quill returned it to Maven end of story, but the skooma quest I completed at dockside and cave reported back to Maven, but still active in to be completed list just will not say completed
