Protecting your Hearthfire home
I was just about to buy land to start building my home when I remembered you would have to defending it. I have not finished the main quest and am doing a lot of running around for the College of Winterhold, so I would not be at my home everyday, and I am worried that if I but anything valuable there it will be taken or destroyed.

So, for anyone who has one of the build-able Hearthfire manors, do the attacks only happen when you are there or can they happen while you are away? If so, what precautions do I need to take to make sure my stuff doesn't disappear? Or is it just easier to download a home from the Modding community?

so far events have only happened while I was there, I would imagine that it would be the task of your Steward to defend the place while you are away though.
Sometimes I find some dead giants, dead draugr, dead wolves, dead bandits near the manors.

My wife was kidnapped when I was away for awhile. At the time the only people in the house were her, the two kids, and the steward. After I returned the Jarl and received my title of Thane as well as the housecarl, I have never had any more issues outside of random bandit attacks and wolves (on my return). So I suspect that the housecarl keeps everyone safe while you are away. I would also add that I no longer live in a hearthfire house because it feels far to large, disorganized (too much storage) and glitchy (can't use display cases, manequin cheat and weapon racks not giving you the weapon back)

My wife's at home. I'm pretty sure that they'd rather I was.

I'd just kill them.

my manors have only ever been attacked when I traveled there plus your house carl+steward should be able to take care of it also

The items cannot be stolen from your home. It's not in the game system. But your animals can be killed if a giant or bandits attack. Your steward should defend your home though :D

Bandits can attack while you are away, or at home. I have survived attacks just as I arrived, or stepped out of the door to go some where. And there have been the occasional body lying around when I arrived.

Could always give your steward better armor and weapons. They will still wear their default armor and weapons around the home, but once they start to defend it they will switch to the better gear.

You can make the change permanent with Ultimate Follower Overhaul. I have heard that other similar mods have perks like that as well, but I have never tried them out.
