I have a glitch with skin textures at the mo..all the bodies are jet black..so by downloading a mod to make my game look better, I've ended up with an inconvenience! :D
Sometime later, I'm running back up the mountain again, and there's my horse, just sort of wandering around. Yes, it was my horse. After that, it would just sort of show up in random places.
I started a new game since then, and haven't been using horses (though I have one stabled at Windstadt.)
Also it gives followers horses too, they don't need to run behind you like peasants anymore (unless it's your thing ^^).
I found a horse like this although not near Winterhold. The thing to note is that fast travelling will bring the last horse you rode with you. So riding the unowned horse meant that it came with you when you fast travelled and not your own horse.
Did you try fast travelling to find "your" horse, before riding the unowned horse? Usually that will bring them out of hiding (although sometimes it will actually kill them, wtf). I don't generally bother with horses - they are more trouble than they are worth, but a mod like Convenient Horses might be the way to go. Jogon's horse is probably still out there wandering around, lost and alone...
