Can't open gate in Irkngthand Grand Cavern
A puzzle in Irkngthand is to open a gate; according to UESP, the trick is to pull two levers on each side of the room fast enough to get the gear on both sides of the gate rolling at once. I've done that several times, in one order and the other. Any ideas why? This is driving me insane (not that I'm sure anybody will know the difference).

I managed to eventually get past by Activating the rh lever first, then using Whirlwind Sprint and then the ALT key to sprint run, leg it to the lh lever, then drop off the raised section down to the gate. It took me a good few attempts though

Yes, what's posted above
Just keep trying until you can get it smooth enough to make it

Oh, well, guess I'll keep trying, then. I just thought that I had been fast enough when I got the cogs on both sides running at the same time.

I don't have Whirlwind in this game yet, and have been trying with just sprinting. Maybe that's not enough.

If you run out of stamina before reaching the other lever a potion (or 6) may help.

Edit: switching to lighter clothes/armour and not "mounting" weapons may improve your speed

I've plenty of stamina (been focussing on that when levelling), sheathed weapons, and made sure I'm not crouching. Still no fun in Irkngthandville.

Btw, did anybody notice that one of the Falmers is placed on top of the little hut with the third lever, looking like he's keeping watch? I found it funny that he needs and overview when the Falmers are blind...

I believe that heavy armour slows you down, I use the steed stone very early on so I have never noticed by how much (if at all). If you ran almost naked you may run faster than if wearing a full set of heavy armour, even though you would be carrying the armour.

Forgot to say I've changed to my new Nightinggale stuff which is light armour. Maybe stripping that, too, might help. Good idea; I guess light armour still weighs something.

Now, where can one buy speedos in Skyrim...

Yup. Maybe I should ask for a ticket to Morrowind instead of the dawn ages when I get to the flashback sequence.

Dang. Nothing. Well, have to stop playing for now and try again tomorrow, though I won't be looking forward to continuing with this. Maybe I'll just chicken out and console-advance a quest for the first time without a glitch or bug being the reason. After all, there's usually a quick way out of these large dungeons, so I won't need the gate down at the end.

Starting with the one on the left and sprinting to the right hand one usually gives you enough time. I achieved this OK. I wonder if firing off the crossbow in the room to the left of the right hand lever makes a difference which I did to try and get the Falmer in the tent at the side of the gate.

Whee! I finally did it. Thanks for the help, everybody. In my second attempt today. Guess I was too tired yesterday. Or maybe my pc was in one of its slower moods; I have to confess it's not a high-end one. It certainly can't have been my old arthritis-ridden fingers, and even less my brains, that are a problem.

A bit funny running around in a dungeon in just a loin-cloth -- I'm tempted to stay here now and just enjoy myself in the pool. Nah, can't do that. The world needs me to do away with an invasive species of flying lizards, and I guess I need the world.

I don't think so. I originally went inside and fiddled with the crossbow, but at some point I thought that maybe I had done some damage that way and I reloaded an earlier save. So, with history rewritten, I haven't even opened the room with the crossbow.

Yes, there's nothing like a little havoc, is there?

Sure. Anything else now I'm there? Anybody for a host of cliff racers?

Again, thanks all!
