im the thane of Whiterun but how do i get the key to my house

when i became the thane i knew i got a house but what i didnt know was how to get the key

Did you buy the house yet? You get the key after you buy the house. In Whiterun you can actually become Thane and get Lydia as a housecarl before you even get the house.

Unfortunately, you still need to plunk down 5000 septims. Talk to Proventus Avenicci in Dragonsreach.

There are quests you have to complete before you are able to buy a house. Then, like Stabbykitteh said, talk to Avenicci.

She's a him. During the day he's sometimes outside on the Great Porch (up the stairs to left or right of Balgruff's throne and out the big doors straight ahead).

Him, he's the steward and if it's daytime he's eoither in the throne room next to the jarl, or eating at one of the tables, sometimes he's upstairs at the map table or at a small table next to it, sometimes he's out on the porch. If it's night time he'll be in his room to the right of the door after you enter the bedroom area of the castle. The door to this area is past the map table.

To purchase the home, you must first complete the Bleak Falls Barrow quest for the Jarl of Whiterun. Upon completion he will permit you to purchase the house from Proventus Avenicci for 5,000 gold.

Proventus Avenicci can be found in the throne room in the afternoon times, he is bald.
