Bolts??
I have a crossbow now but can't find anyone selling bolts. Haven't found any blacksmith recipes for any bolts either. Anyone know a mod that lets you make any bolt you want?

No, but you can go to Dawnguard fort. Bolts lying around respawn regularly. You can also watch guys shooting targets there for a while and pick all the bolts from the targets. Another option is Dwemer spheres (or whatever those rolling robots are called) they frequently contain Dwemer bolts, which are actually better than steel bolts.

I believe you have to mod the game to get vendors who sell bolts. I just checked Nexus and found a mod:

Crossbow Bolts For Vendors[skyrim.nexusmods.com]

There is also Craftable Crossbows and Bolts for all[skyrim.nexusmods.com] if you like to craft your own ammunition, something I prefer to do than always find/buy what I need.

If you pursue the Dawngaurd side instead of becoming a vampire the Dawngaurd has you search for schematics to make bolts. I went with being a vampire so now I have to console command the dwarven bolts. It's the only way I can keep all three of my crossbows furnished with bolts.

Console command: player.additem xx00D099 xxx (first set of "x" is for the load order of Dawngard, second set of "x" is for the number of bolts you want to give yourself.

Thanks. You all are very helpful.

furryoldguyjeans thanks a ton for linking those mods!

I finally got around to starting the Dawnguard questline and I found it a little crappy that they give you the crossbow and only like 20 bolts - leaving you to dig around the fort or (as it sounds) dwemer spheres for any more.

I'm not all that surprised that Beth made it so that Dawnguard items don't usually appear in the base-game world but I would've thought they would've had the sense to set up a vendor/smith or such in Fort Dawnguard to let players buy new things like the bolts among other new stuff.

Follow the dawnguard side of the quest a little bit and you will recruit two members for the dawnguard who will sell steel bolts along with their other goods. One of them will ask you to find schematics for more advanced crossbows/bolts and will start stocking them as you complete these mini quests.

You can also craft bolts at the forge inside of fort dawnguard as long as you have the relevent smithing perk(possibly need to complete the first schematic quest first), you may need to use a mod to expand that to other forges though.

Fear2288, thank tborgen for posting the question in the first place. If they hadn't created the thread I would never have gone and searched Nexus for the mods.

I hear that, definitely way too restrictive when it comes to getting the DG items a character needs to survive in a hostile world. :)

On a side note I've always thought it a bit ridiculous that Bethesda made it so easy to smith armor and weapons, a quick *bang* *clank* and even a noob character can make a working item that has no flaws. Yes, it is a flipping game, but making smithing be a bit more time/effort consuming would be really immersive. Ever try to fletch arrow in the meat world? It ain't easy! Try to make a sword or other weapon? Get burnt by the forge or smash your fingers a few thousand times before you can even think of making something that does what you want. Make a bow? Get ready for the bow string to break and cut your face or gouge an eye out.

Can I stop the rant now? ;)

I sort of agree that it would be interesting if smithing was a bit more "challenging" but unfortunately I think it might devolve into either the player having to craft/buy/find/etc a ton of resources or Bethesda would do something very uncharacteristic of them such as smithing "mini games".

Honestly, what I would like to see would be a complete overhaul of the entire weapons/armor system. As I've grown more accustomed to "roleplaying" with my characters it always felt strange to play as...for example...some veteran of the Imperial legion and have all "Imperial" armor and weapons become obsolete after level 15. It just doesn't feel right putting him/her in something like Orc armor or have him/her using Dwemer weapons.

I think it would be really immersive and cool if each playable race had their own sizable and lore-friendly weapons/armor loadout that covered light and heavy armor as well as all kinds of weapons that would be appropriate for them. In addition that pool for each race would have weapons/armor useful for early, mid, and high level characters and you'd work your way up there just like you work your way up to Elven, Orc, Daedra, etc as it is now.

Simpatico in that thinking, I couldn't agree more with your ideas regarding the dumb leveling of armor/weapons.

But then I don't have several million dollars to pay for a total make-up of the game so I deal with what Bethesda gives us as best as I can. ;)

yeah, it'd be nice if a system like that became a reality but I have my doubts Bethesda is going to put that much time in sitting down, designing, etc an expanded and lengthy list of weapons/armors for each category/race.

I can tell you though that if I had the technical skill to mod and such I would be happy to do it myself.
